I am enthusiatic, warm, and critically-engaged.
My Self-Summary
I am currently keeping myself entertained by teaching ESL and
"learning" how to "play the guitar." Some things that always keep
me entertained are telling stories, cooking vegetarian concoctions,
and singing songs.
I admire people who can articulate well-crafted arguments, but I
respect people who admit when they're not sure about something.
What I’m doing with my life
Right now, I'm working at a public interest law firm, but counting
down the days to when I can return to the nonprofit world. My ideal
job would include: talking with Folks about Issues that Matter,
writing engagingly about social justice issues, arts and crafts,
strategizing, playing in dirt and growing things, going to lots of
meetings.
I’m really good at
Getting lost, Asking for directions.
The first things people usually notice about me
I gesture emphatically when I talk.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
My favorite book is God of Small Things by Arhundati Roy. Also up
there are: Mama Day (Gloria Naylor), Theatre of the Oppressed
(Augusto Boal), Rise up Singing, A Legacy of Liberation: Thabo
Mbeki and the Future of the South African Dream (Mark Gevisser),
The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (Junot Diaz), Gilead
(Marilynne Robinson)...
My favorite movie is What's Up Doc with Barbara Streisand. I can't
help it.
As for food, I admire a chick pea in any context.
The six things I could never do without
1. Hiking
2. Cats and other small mammals
3. Reading material--novels, cereal boxes, the red eye, the back of
your tshirt...
4. My garlic press
5. Community--friends/family/neighbors/comrades
6. A sense of possibility, a framework to make and break
I spend a lot of time thinking about
how to integrate my ideals with a 9-5 lifestyle, creating
community, graduate education, South Africa, and where I want to
live when I grow up.
On a typical Friday night I am
going to a poetry slam, listening to live music, dinner with
friends, watching movies from the $2 movie store down the block.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit here
I work in a tall office building, and every day I hope to get the
elevator to myself so I can jump as it reaches my floor and briefly
defy gravity.
