My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Where I’m from: Midwestern childhood, NYC adulthood, with travels to Europe and Asia and a four-year stint in Bay Area.

What (and who) I love: swimming in lakes, road trips, old farmhouses, great writing (be it in books or film), so-fresh-it's-still-warm mozzarella, my sisters and brothers whom I was born into and the ones I’ve chosen along the way, dark chocolate, making movies, watching my oldest son play soccer, watching my youngest play baseball, bicycling through Manhattan traffic, the smell of my hometown, the thrill of stepping out into another country… and most of all, sharing all of the above with my kids.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Making movies (animation), raising kids, being a friend, driving to Brooklyn for the best pizza in the country, writing, thinking, wondering, walking.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Being a friend, being in two places at once, making my sister laugh until she wets her pants, homemade lasagna, singing out of tune (with gusto), optimism despite the circumstances.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Probably my smile - at least I get a lot of comments from NYC strangers about it.

Recent favorite: All the Light We Cannot See. Really like young adult fiction, too, and current YA favorites are: To Kill a Mockingbird, The Book Thief, Looking for Alaska, and The Absolutely True Story of a Part-Time Indian.

Some favorite movies: Love a lot of movies - both high and low brow. Thought Beasts of the Southern Wild was amazing and have been surprised by how much I laughed at stuff like Hang Over and Austin Powers. Guilty pleasure, can-watch-it-any-time movies? About a Boy, Love Actually, The Big Chill. I'm sure there are many more ...

Some favorite TV: Sherlock Holmes, Blacklist, Robin Hood, Merlin, Scandal.

Some favorite music: Ed Sheeran, Sara Bareilles, Dixie Chicks, Indigo Girls, Fun, Jonathan Butler, old R&B, Creedence Clearwater Revival and lots of stuff from the 70's.

Favorite food: Indian - but I like a lot of different types of food.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
Things - as opposed to people - I would prefer never to do without: laptop, camera, cell phone, passport, car, bicycle.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
eating dinner with my best friends and our families.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I don't understand the appeal of jazz music.

Oh jeez. I've tried to be brief and upbeat in this profile. But then came this question. The thing is, I'm trying for a new model - the kind, generous, loyal, deeply decent, and most of all, relatively sane guy model. But ask ANY guy if he's those things, and he says he is. So at the risk of sounding wildly cynical (I'm not; I promise), I am going to brave some questions that get AT those things.

Let's start with the screening-out questions. In the past two years of dating, has anyone walked out of the restaurant, leaving you sitting there because of how offensive you were? Have you ever provoked an otherwise devoutly nonviolent person to fling vegetables at you while she screamed that you are the most selfish guy in the world? Has a room full of new acquaintances gone quiet after you've spoken at length about yourself? Did you later find those acquaintances huddled in the deep corner of the kitchen, whispering? Do you think it's appealing to talk about your fetishes on your first date? Do you ever shout out your opinions in movie theaters? Has a woman left you because you cheated, lied, drank too much, or similarly acted egregiously? Did you vote for GW Bush?

Yes to any of the above? I'd really appreciate it, if you didn't message me.

Now for the screening-in questions. Do you pretty much always return shopping carts to the designated areas? Do you vote? Go out of your way to recycle the morning newspaper? Do you hold the door for the person coming out? The person behind you? Take your turn with letting the other driver into your lane? Do the antics of little kids make you laugh? Do you laugh at yourself? Do you say sorry? Do you ask lots of questions? Do you ever change your mind? Do you want to hear other people's stories? Do you remember them? Do you catch yourself feeling grateful just to be on the planet? Is "thank you" one of your catch phrases? Do you pretty much always ask the other adults in the room if they'd like a glass of wine, beer, etc. when you are pouring one for yourself? Do you wake up early and exhausted yet still feel compelled to make sure the people you love have some sort of something in their bellies before heading out for the day? Do you ever make the morning coffee? Do you relish weekend mornings? Are you terrified of pigeons?

Yes to most of these? Me too! Please message me!

Bonus points if you really aren't so afraid of pigeons (it would be harder if we both were). More bonus points if you have never uttered the words, "That's just the type of guy I am." An enthusiastic, "YES! MESSAGE ME!" if you can play the guitar (or endeavor to), know your way around a campfire, and are pretty much always up for weekend adventures with friends and family, be they the beach, a cabin, a hike, a bike ride ... I offer, same, btw ... except for the guitar. I am, however, an enthusiastic audience.
