I am good-natured, excitable, and encyclopedic.

My Self-Summary

I know a little bit about a lot of different things, and a lot about a few things. I like to have long converstations, which tend to drift toward the technical or philosophical or confessional, but usually in a good way. I'm a bit like the infinite improbability drive from HHGG; sometimes things fall into place around me, and sometimes they just become bizarre in a relatively benign way. If you're an expert at something, I want to talk shop with you.

What I’m doing with my life

I do research at a national lab, which goes toward a PhD in materials science. The do-less-than-nothig congress forgot to fund my old project, so I've changed my dissertation topic from "final optics for inertial confinement fusion energy", to "transparent ceramic laser host materials". If you ask me to explain what exactly that means, I might let the conversation become a little one-sided. If it gets tiresome, please feel free to cut me off & decisively change the subject.

I’m really good at

Fixing things without proper tools, sprinkling a conversation with relevant & obscure bits of scientific trivia, learning from you. I'm told I come up with good analogies. Cooking, engineer style (i.e., I can meet requirements, given enough time and information, but I'm bad at designing a menu...). Also origami: I can make smaller paper cranes than most; I start with paper the size of my fingernail. I posted photographic evidence of this, but it was removed by an admin.

The first things people usually notice about me

I've had a lot of compliments on my smile, and on the breadth of my knowledge. I have an odd perspective on some things.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

(a) Cryptonomicon; The Structure of Scientific Revolutions; The Disposessed (or other Ursula K. LeGuin); Uncle Tungsten

(b) Pi, The Incredibles, Snatch, The Hudsucker Proxy, Memento, The Life of Brian, Secretary, Wallace and Grommit

(c) Anything that isn't hackneyed and overproduced, with a soft spot for '90s rock

(d) Thai curry, veggie burritos, broccoli, steak, hash browns, sweet corn picked 10 minutes ago, green beans, kim chee, stout/porter (it's food...trust me), any dinner from the second day of a backpacking trip, chorizo burritos, tapenade, In 'N Out, gelato, swordfish (note, I didn't capitalize this or put it in column b).

The six things I could never do without

Maslow covered the essentials, but otherwise...

[1]Friends

[2]Reddit

[3]Interesting scenery to walk past, and the time to take it in

[4]Novel, exciting ideas (see 1 & 2)

[5]Respect

[6]A challenge (see 1 & 4)

I spend a lot of time thinking about

technical solutions to technical problems, politics & the coming collapse of the dollar, the right thing for me to do in whatever my current situation is, my looming academic requirements.

On a typical Friday night I am

I like this question almost as little as the "most private thing" question, so I'll answer the question I wish they had asked:

On a typical Monday night, I am at Starry Plough, taking a lesson in céilí dancing. It's a very geek-friendly form: it's so geometric and algorithmic that my mind can occupy itself with the patterns, and let my body do its own thing. It's the most comfortable I've ever felt on a dance floor. I'm not very good at it, but I have a lot of fun.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

My password is ********, according to the login screen, but I think there's a hidden meaning to all those asterisks.

You should message me if

you think you might want to meet me.
