I am hungry, thoughtful, and often sleep deprived.

My Self-Summary

I'm a graduate student in the UW physics department, starting my second year in Madison. I live on coffee and tea. When I'm not physics-ing, I'm relaxing any way I can (beers, movies, games, small amounts of TV, and reading). I've been trying to spend more of my time outdoors lately (running, biking, small amounts of sailing). I like to travel and see new places.

I obviously like science and math, but I also love random trivia. Wikipedia's basically heaven for me; I read way more articles than I'm willing to admit.

I listen to a lot of music. Almost constantly, really. Life's more interesting with a soundtrack.

I'm trying to learn French, since I'll probably live there in the near future.

What I’m doing with my life

I'm training to be a high energy particle physicist. I'm not entirely sure where that's leading me, but I mostly enjoy it. I don't have any grand plan in store, and I'm coming to terms with the fact that I still have no idea what I want to be when I grow up.

I’m really good at

Dr. Mario and making scrambled eggs. Also, listening. And wasting hours of time on the internet. Like most people my age, I'm a champion of finding things to distract me from getting work done.

I'm a pretty good photographer, too.

The first things people usually notice about me

I like to think it's my eyes or smile, but realistically it's probably my height. Or my awesome Chewbacca on a bicycle shirt (if I happen to be wearing it).

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Books -- The Phantom Tollbooth, Vonnegut, The Iliad, Catch-22.

Music -- If I could only listen to one band for the rest of my life, I would (currently) pick Sigur Ros. Other favorites include Iron and Wine, The Books, Radiohead, and Animal Collective. My tastes are pretty widespread and I'm willing to listen to (almost) anything at least once.

Food -- Probably mom's spaghetti, but it's hard to pick. Food is fantastic.

Movies -- The Star Wars Trilogy, Ghostbusters, Wayne's World, Primer

TV Shows -- Arrested Development, House, some seasons of the Office, Futurama

The six things I could never do without

The Internet
Wikipedia
Coffee
Sleep
Laughter
Family/friends

I spend a lot of time thinking about

It depends on the time of day.

In the morning, I'm usually thinking about whatever bizarre dream I happened to remember or trying to figure out how some song got stuck in my head while I slept.

In the afternoon, it's usually work-related. Or dinner-related. Or general thoughts about the future.

In the evening, I think about random things. Places to travel, bands to listen to, movies to see, and whatever random things my websurfing leads me to.

On a typical Friday night I am

Not doing physics. Usually beers and friends are involved. I usually prefer staying in to going out, but every now and then I'll head to the bars.

If it's a game night, I'll be in the Kohl Center watching hockey. I love hockey.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I can be shy when initially meeting people. I'm getting better, though.

I'm also overly self-conscious about what I put in online profiles.

You should message me if

You want to.
