I am deceptively quiet, logical, and thoughtful.

My Self-Summary

I'm your typical introverted engineer... minus the typical. Even though I'm a geeky technology freak I'm also a tree-hugging hippie at heart.

I like anything to do with water mostly, and specifically the ocean. Swimming, scuba diving, sailing (though I've never been, I really want to learn), building autonomous boats and underwater vehicles for scientific research, etc. Land stuff is fun too: hiking, creek walking, pumpkin picking, tree climbing, back-roads-exploring, sustainable farming, cooking. I really like making things but lately school has been getting in the way of my knitting, paper folding, violin practice and general crafting. I am continuously striving to maintain a healthy balance between school and life which is hard when school has been my life for my entire life.

What I’m doing with my life

Enjoying it. I'm being a grad student at Virginia Tech researching underwater vehicle control and navigation. After so many years in school now I am a bit anxious (and scared) to get out into the real world and try to make some kind of positive impact in whatever way I can. I'm also slightly scared I might use this trepidation as an excuse to just stay in school for ever. It wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.

I’m really good at

being sarcastic and sarcastically witty. Pretending to give the impression that I'm listening. Thinking about things from different perspectives. Listening. Spotting recyclable material that has been put in the trash. Being a dork. Dreaming up fun projects that I never get around to starting. Yet.

The first things people usually notice about me

I guess that I'm kinda tall and tend to flail about. And sometimes I don't talk very much at first. It depends a lot on who I'm around, I tend to adapt to other persons personalities.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

(a) Madeline L'Engle, Toni Morrison, Issac Asimov, Orson Scott Card, many others (b) Amelie, Equilibrium, Gattaca, so many others, anything that's fun/artsy/subtle/different/welldone/etc. (c) I dunno, don't really actively listen to music usually, when I do it's usually classical that holds my interest for more than 5 seconds (d) eggplant, leeks, kale, potatoes, onions, garlic... it's probably easiest to just say "not beets" (though I keep giving them a try periodically to see if my opinion has changed)

The six things I could never do without

eggplant, day light, plants, good books, good friends, something interesting to think about

I spend a lot of time thinking about

compost, climate change, how all our problems would be solved if we switched to a green-energy economy and sustainable farming practices. Ethics, morals, emotions, humanity, life. How do I fit into society, locally and on a more global scale?

On a typical Friday night I am

home watching a movie, or having game night with friends, possibly drinking a tasteful festive beverage while doing either.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I probably need a haircut.

You should message me if

you can take some sarcasm and good-humored remarks without crying and dish it right back and realize that even exhibiting that behavior someone can still be a genuine, caring, sincere person. I'm only mean to people I like. Also, I tend not to get along with people who are not open to the concept of recycling and general resource conservation, so, you know, keep that in mind, and if necessary, start being a decent and moral person and recycle an aluminum can before messaging me, or buy your next meal at your local farmers market.
