Nurse, drummer, gamer, nerd, queer, photographer, writer, night owl
and ruffian-at-large, among other things. I can be serious, but
prefer to laugh when possible. My interests and my tastes are
pretty varied and hard to pin down, although i'm a sucker for
interesting socks and good hats.
I'm an ER nurse, so i'm pretty good at taking the good and the bad
and the ridiculous as it comes, and making it work. I'm a big fan
of learning new things, and willing to try just about anything
once, as long as i'm allowed to be silly while doing so. (Usually i
do a little dance. No, really.)
I like to read, take road trips, and i spend more time on the
internet than i probably should, although i like talking to people
in real life too. I have a bad habit of overreliance on
parentheses. I make a mean mix tape, although sometimes i get a
little perfectionist. I once went to Graceland for reasons i could
not explain. I named my cats Frank and Joe, after the Hardy Boys
(the detectives, not the wrestlers). I have lousy balance, but
excellent recovery skills, meaning i usually stick the landing - or
at least tuck and roll. And, last but not least, i make some pretty
What I’m doing with my life
Working, writing, exploring Madison, road tripping, and trying to
figure out what my next step is going to be, although that's a
continual process. If i'm not working, i can often be found in my
local coffeeshop, mostly because i love the people there. I just
started a queer tumblr, which is occupying a good chunk of my
brain. Now that the curling season's over (and it's FINALLY getting
nice out) i've been riding my bike more, and i'm hoping that by the
end of the summer i'll default to riding my bike rather than
hopping in the car when i want to go somewhere in town.
I’m really good at
Nerding out, especially over random things, like maps.
Trivia and useless information.
The first things people usually notice about me
My favorite shoes. They are the stuff of legend. (Mostly because
they are older than my nursing career, and it shows.)
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
When in doubt, the Cold War is my kryptonite. (I have no idea why.)
I'm also a bit of a comics nerd and medgeek. Random things i've
liked lately, or keep coming back to:
Books: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Vurt, Tinker Tailor
Soldier Spy, Tuck Everlasting; Authors: Jeff Noon, Jim Carroll,
Junot Diaz, Dorothy Allison, and David Mitchell.
Movies: The Avengers, Inception, Brick, Rocknrolla, My Blue Heaven,
RED, Love Actually, The Magnificent Seven, Moulin Rouge, Nick &
Norah's Infinite Playlist, Metropolis, The Brothers Bloom
TV: Justified, The Middleman, The Sandbaggers, Rome, Scrubs, Cowboy
Bebop, The Muppet Show.
Music: Roy Orbison, Wilco, Beats Antique, BRAINSTORM, Sharon van
Etten, Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band, Wild Flag, 50 Foot Wave, Johnny
Cash, Radiohead, The Magnetic Fields, Janelle Monae, Franz
Ferdinand, Lyle Lovett, Talking Heads, Amy Ray, and pretty much
everything Merge Records ever put out.
The six things I could never do without
Pilot pen, a crossword puzzle, comfy shoes, music, an open road
and, yes, my cats.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
How i would cover certain songs. Band names. Puns. Road trip
destinations. Story and game plots.
On a typical Friday night I am
Hanging out with the drunks at work, out to dinner with friends,
playing board games, or spending time with extended family.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
Julia Child is my Elvis. I kind of want to be her when i grow up.
You should message me if
you'd like to get coffee, or roll dice, or go on an adventure -
even if that's just visiting a side of town you've never been to.
