My Self-Summary

The last page of Charlotte's Web includes this beautiful statement: "It is not often that someone comes along who is a true friend and a good writer. Charlotte was both." This life of mine is all about trying to follow in Charlotte's (many tiny) footsteps.

I'm a journalist and editor, and the work I do allows me to combine my passions in ways that are totally delightful and never the same twice. I love big words, big thoughts, big dreams, and a finely tuned sense of humor. I can tell a joke, wield a chef’s knife, and do a happy barefoot dance to the Stones, all simultaneously, which is what I think is meant by "educated." I have a couple degrees, too, if you prefer the more conventional definition.

Though I'm a textbook introvert, I adore opening my home to friends, and filling the rooms with noise and laughter and good food. I am easily delighted, bad at all organized sports, and a world-class wingman. I'm allergic to melons, have rabid opinions about typefaces, and think no day is complete without a good cup of coffee.

If you really knew me, you'd know that I worry a lot, that I have high standards, that I love to make people laugh, and that I'm on a never-ending quest to be smarter, braver, and more fully present. You'd know that I'm a bit canine when it comes to trust and devotion, as well as my ceaseless desire to cuddle. I prefer Scrabble to Fetch-the-Stick, though.

If you can go from tenderness to transcendentalism to dirty jokes and back again without breaking a sweat, if you have an opinion about both Updike and urbanization, if you believe in something larger than yourself (but maybe aren’t sure of its name), if you can stay grounded but still manage to find wonder and silliness in every day, and if you believe in the raw power of the exuberant, no-holds-barred, soul-affirming bearhug ... well, we just might get along.
