I am artistic, analytical, and kind.

My Self-Summary

I'm a decent man living a decent life. Art pulls me one way. Technology pulls me another way. I live somewhere in between.

I love people and being around them. It's exciting and energizing. Someone once told me that I'm the quietest extrovert he knows. Around the same time, someone else told me that I have a big personality.

I love being active, either afoot or on a bicycle. In my dreams, I take a one-speed bike to London or Paris and bike around the city. Sometimes in my dreams, I'm climbing Mont Ventoux or Pike's Peak on that one-speed.

Unlike most people, I come with a user manual. It describes the product series and although I differ significantly from the general product in a few areas it will help you understand me.

What I’m doing with my life

Hacking for a living. On the cusp of releasing my first open source software project.

Practicing photography for serious fun. I've shown my work in a gallery in my neighborhood and in City Hall in Alexandria. I'm a fine art photographer and I concentrate on portraiture and macro photography. My most recent project is the union of the two. I have a pipe dream of opening an occasional gallery in my home. I need a little help cleaning out and painting the room.

My favorite place to be is on a bicycle. I own four of them, including a tandem. In years past, I've managed a couple of centuries per year. Alas, I've fallen out of it since 2007. I'm hopeful that that will change in 2009.

In June, 2009, I completed a three-year term as a Trustee of the Unitarian Universalist church I attend. Talk about a growth experience!

I'd like it if I could find someone to help me put up picture molding and paint my bedroom. I have lots of art to hang. It's fun with someone but a chore by myself.

I’m really good at

Figuring things out.

Absorbing large amounts of information to be analyzed and understood later.

Composition and lighting.

Listening to nice old ladies sitting by themselves at parties.

The first things people usually notice about me

My build. Let's face it, I'm skinny.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I don't listen to commercial radio much any more. I listen to the NPR and Pacifica affiliates. For radio music, I listen to jazz, blues, hip hop, and old school R&B. In my collection, I have music ranging from Pink Floyd to Diana Krall to DJ Dangermouse to Kronos Quartet.

I'm a big fan of James Bond movies. I have all of them on DVD except for Never Say Never Again. I have about half of them on Blu-Ray. Other favorites include The Matrix; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; American Beauty; Magnolia; Moulin Rouge; The Sound of Music; Men In Black; and every movie ever made by Jacques Tati. I like some of the shorts from Channel 101: NY and a lot of the free video available to the Miro player.

I've read a lot of science fiction. I've been a fan of cyberpunk since William Gibson published Neuromancer. Generally, I like Gibson, Neal Stephenson, Larry Niven, Robert Heinlein, and Ray Bradbury. Outside of the genre, I like W. Somerset Maugham, Saki, O. Henry, and Oscar Wilde.

I'm a fan of J.K. Rowling. I've read the Harry Potter books several times. Once, I was reading a HP book when I had the flu. I kept falling asleep while reading, dreaming I was in the story, then waking to begin the cycle again.

I'm an omnivore with vegetarian tendencies when I cook. Generally, I like food and I like to cook. It's most fun when there are people to cook with. There are only a few things I won't eat.

The six things I could never do without

A bicycle, a cat, a library card, glasses, kisses, homebrew.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Handheld computers and location based services; removing the clutter from my home and my life; my family; photography, composition, and lighting. I used to think a lot about Sanskrit and semantics. I'd like to return to that some day.

On a typical Friday night I am

Pick the one you like:

  • At church, then out for dinner with friends.
  • At home, watching James Bond with the cat.
  • Practicing night photography in Adams Morgan.
  • Aligning the carpet edges with the Earth's magnetic lines of force.
  • Looking at pretty pictures on OKCupid.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

My sister died in September.

You should message me if

You like yourself, you're happy with your life, drama-free, and crowds excite you; if you're outgoing, creative, and independent; if you've read the fine manual. Bonus points if you're part artist, part engineer. Double coupons if you're athletic or you can speak ubbi dubbi or you're a Strobist or you know how Raymond Luxury-Yacht pronounces his name or if you think this is funny.
