My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Hi! Nice to meet you.

I adore Mary Poppins. Sometimes I pretend I'm flying like Mary Poppins when I ride on escalators. (I recommend it, especially if you are prone to escalator anxiety on the DC metro.)
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Things I tend to do on a regular basis:
- trip over my own feet
- sing and make up folk song versions of my favorite Doctor Who themes (don't knock it until you've tried it, baby)
- spend an absurd amount of time on Reddit
- eat a lot of hummus, guacamole, and cheddar cheese. mmmm. I am also super into roasted broccoli lately. Roasting vegetables! Like, twenty times more delicious. I'm telling you. If you get nothing else from my profile, please take this advice. :P Vegetable Update, because you needed it, 7/21/14: I'm in love with Brussels sprouts. I should probably just close this profile up, I love them so much.

Vocation-wise, I'm a librarian and I just got my M.Ed in Arts in Education. :)

I love to laugh. I really love to sing, and I'll probably sing along to anything. I'm singing along to the Avett Brothers as I type this. The multi-tasking is hard.

I listen to the same songs over and over sometimes. Okay, all the time.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
I have spent HOURS AND HOURS mastering this one Sporcle quiz. Countries of the World (woohoo!). Let's just be clear here: I am a champion. The Balkans still really trip me up, though. I have to be honest with you all here, because OKC is all about baring one's soul. :P

I also, y'know, defeated 2048, but that seems very March 2014 now. Also, I think everyone beat it before I did. Oh well!

I am also very good at emoting. :P
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
They say I walk funny! Hmm, what else?

That I'll probably be in navy and white stripes. I have a disproportionate number of such clothing items.

I just asked my little sister what the first things people notice about me would be, and she said, "They'd probably hear you first." So, there you go: feet shuffling, loud talking (or singing!), and all. :D

Other things: I am almost always wearing glasses in person, but rarely in photos, because I hate glasses-glare. :)
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food

Books: TAMORA PIERCE. Anything by her. Diana Wynne Jones. Also anything by her!

I adore YA lit. Adore talking about it, adore writing about it, adore reading it, and adore that I am not alone in my love of YA lit well into my twenties! I recently finished the incredible Fire and Thorns series by Rae Carson. I keep rereading the best bits.

Actual book titles: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling (of course!), Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, Bluebeard by Kurt Vonnegut, Lamb by Christopher Moore, The Princess Bride by William Goldman, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz, A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving, lots of Shakespeare (I was in a Shakespeare company in college, so I'm very fond!), and Paper Towns by John Green.

Movies: The Princess Bride, Ratatouille, Singin' in the Rain, That Thing You Do!, Benny and Joon, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Big Fish, LotR, Pirates of the Caribbean, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Howl's Moving Castle (I have this weird obsession with the Christian Bale dub), Love Actually, 1776 the musical, Mulan, Help! featuring the Beatles!

I also really loved Frozen. Like, so much. Let's talk about Frozen. Let's sing songs from Frozen together. And Disney and/or Pixar and the complicated position of:

1) Loving the hell out of Disney and/or Pixar films while recognizing...
2) ...the fact that your childhood was formed, in small part, by one of the largest corporations in the world...
3) ...which means it is largely a part of the Media Problem you love to deconstruct and, to use a nerd word, unpack
3) ...and is a corporation that, as an Education student, you want to CHANGE DESPERATELY.

Shows: Doctor Who, Firefly, Chuck, Parks & Recreation (!), The Mindy Project, Gilmore Girls, Flight of the Conchords, 30 Rock (werewolf bar mitzvah, spooky scary!), Buffy/Angel (but I'm really behind), Brooklyn Nine Nine

Music: if one can sing along, I will like it. :) Power jams include "Africa" by Toto, "Spaceman" by The Killers, and "Young Blood" by Norah Jones. Other favorite bands include: The Beatles, Elton John, Billy Joel, The Fratellis, Slow Club, Flight of the Conchords, The Shins, Belle & Sebastian, BnL (still!), David Bowie, Lisa Hannigan, Mika, the Duhks, and the Mountain Goats. I've recently been enjoying the Avett Brothers a lot.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
We aren't talking basic human needs, right? We're talking basic me needs here. So:

1. my loved ones
2. Gmail (oh, god)
3. hummus (I'm telling you, I have a problem. turn back now.)
4. dark chocolate (this is another problem)
5. some sort of performative outlet!
6. a book in my purse!
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
- whatever song is stuck in my head! there is always a song stuck in my head.
- I tend to process thoughts through daydreams and conversations, if that makes sense? I don't know if it does! but there you go. that's something else.
- how much I love Amy Poehler
- nerd culture and materialism and sexism and it tends to bog me down in a weird wandering, vaguely rant-y frame of mind

Here are some actual topics that crossed my mind today: counterfactual history, fan culture, how Romeo and Juliet should never be produced as a sappy romance because it misses the point, and the ways that we watch TV today (or: Hulu, a dissertation). (I was a film major during undergrad! Geeking out over this stuff is my JAM.)

Sometimes I think about what name I might have besides the one I was given at birth. (I've settled on Maggie! I used to play a character named Adele, and I'm fond of that one too.)
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
I love all sorts of low-key adventures! So Friday nights can involve wonderful books, awesome dinner plans, wandering-abouts, or movie marathons.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I brush my teeth in the shower. I'm hygienic, though! I promise!

Public for private reasons: I'm not a big drinker and would rather not just get a drink for the first date.

I love making new friends, too!
