My self-summary
Recently returning from the pool with my kids -- beautiful day, them contentedly slurping their frozen yogurt, pleasantly tired and looking forward to a shower -- I remembered the movie scene when Jack Nicholson announces to the packed waiting room at his therapist's office "Maybe this is as good as it gets." And I thought, I'm OK if this is as good as it gets. But my next thought was -- nah. It could get a little better. :)

I'm an honest, energetic, thoughtful, smart person with a good sense of humor. I enjoy my work as an environmental lawyer, but I'm not a workaholic. And although I love saving the planet, I'm not a big camper. I'm a good sport and will do/enjoy some outdoorsy stuff (love sailing), but like to clean up and have a nice dinner etc. afterwards. :)

Life amuses me a great deal, but then I'm a pretty lucky person. I'm making a real effort to be empathetic with people who are dealing with trying circumstances rather than trying to fix things. I'm also to the stage of my life where I don't expect to know the answers anyway! It's really about learning from others by hearing their stories and experiences for me these days. In many ways I feel younger than I did 10 years ago; indeed I spend a fair amount of time with young people since they are so energetic and passionate.

I'm looking for someone smart and personable who sees the absurdity and joy in life, who has goals and accomplishments but doesn't take himself too seriously. I definitely have a zest for life and want someone who shares that perspective: a partner in crime.
What I’m doing with my life
I work full time for a non-profit and share parenting of three great elementary/junior high school-aged kids. I enjoy time to myself and socializing with friends, but I have recently come to realize that I'd also like to be in a relationship with someone extraordinary.
I’m really good at
I have a pretty good sense of humor and have become a better listener. I can get along with many kinds of people and can hang in many different surroundings -- I think people can tell when you're genuinely interested in them. I love to read and follow politics pretty closely. I make good chocolate chip cookies but that's about it. Love to eat out but I'm not a foodie.
The first things people usually notice about me
My energy level, that I'm smart, and that I am usually smiling.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: East of Eden, War and Peace (actually most Steinbeck and Tolstoy), Slouching Towards Bethlehem, Watership Down, The Antidote: Happiness for People Who Can't Stand Positive Thinking (recent), When Things Fall Apart by Pema Chodron
Movies: Good Will Hunting, The Philadelphia Story, The Blues Brothers, Oceans 11 (George Clooney version), Twilight (I admit it!), Dazed and Confused, The Big Chill . . .
Music: Rolling Stones, Rihanna, The Police/Sting, some Paul Simon . . . essentially the music they play on DC101 + good pop. I am always trying new songs and love live music. Unless it's bad.
Food: French fries are my biggest downfall. Pizza, red wine, dark chocolate, cherries, watermelon, sushi, steak, french bread ... I like to eat. And I work out a lot so I can. :)
The six things I could never do without
Things as opposed to people: my phone, earphones, food and water, sleep! I think we tend to confound needs and wants. I *could* do without most things. I just don't want to!
I spend a lot of time thinking about
My kids, friends, social life, work, politics, racial justice, my next workout, the mysterious and quixotic nature of life.
On a typical Friday night I am
Having a drink with a friend or spending time with my kids, then later probably working on my quilt while watching a movie, often one I've seen before. I could see Fargo, The Blues Brothers, etc dozens of times. And may have, I'm not keeping track. :)
You should message me if
You're single, smart (which doesn't necessarily have to do with education!), confident but not arrogant, responsible but w a glint in your eye.
