BOOKS!
Fiction:
I've enjoyed Poe and Orson Scott Card, and at one point I had all
the fiction ever written by Asimov.
Borges and Bradbury are excellent. I like Douglas Adams when I'm in
need of some more surrealism.
A Confederacy of Dunces was pretty much the most fun and laughter
I've had reading a book.
I got through about 15 of the 20 or so Aubrey-Maturin novels on
which the movie 'Master and Commander' was based. They're awesome,
and part of the reason I'm interested in learning how to sail
well.
Cory Doctorow put up "Little Brother" for free, and you should go
read it here:

If you want something a little more bite-sized, Sam writes awesome
science fiction. Here's a taste:

Go read it! It's short, sweet and delicious.
Finally, if you haven't read 'Machine Of Death', you're totally
missing out. It's here and it's free.

It's always bothered me that they put SF and fantasy next to each
other at the bookstore. They're totally different in my
eyes. I basically can't read fantasy... it hurts. SF has
historically made me feel both smart and hopeful.
Non:
I've got a giant stack of libertarian/anarchist philosophy I'm
slowly trying to get through (Carlson, Spooner, Hayek, etc.). After
that I'll try to tackle a bunch of statists.
I've done my share of non-political philosophy as well. Heidegger
is a particularly personal favorite, followed shortly by Kant. Lots
of "build a giant intellectual system" stuff happening. It's like a
cathedral... I don't think I could ever build one, and I think it's
really unnecessary, but it's also beautiful.
MOVIES / SHOWS!
I used to enjoy disdaining popular things. Big-name/popular movies
received scorn. Not so much anymore.
Boondock Saints was good. And Gattaca. I think it's because I have
a brother and there's something about that those movies that gives
me a kick in the gut in that regard. I also liked The Zero Effect,
though I think it would do better as a TV show. Johnny To's "The
Mission" was the best Hong Kong action flick ever. There are a few
that I like that seem polarizing, opinionwise: Unbreakable, Lost in
Translation, Primer, Rocket Science.
I don't watch much tv, but recently got the DVD set of 'The
Prisoner" with Patrick Mcgoohan, which needs to be watched at least
once by everyone who likes any degree of surrealism and crazy 70's
spy kitsch.
MUSIC!
I don't like putting music into genres because it's usually right
near the borders of the genres that the must interesting stuff
appears. US3's "cantaloop" for example, is rap/jazz and it's just
awesome, though I'm not a particularly huge fan of rap or
jazz.
Check out my Pandora station for a feel of what I like. You should
get Pandora anyway if you spend any time in front of a computer and
want music to listen to.

It's a lot of 90's rock and alternative, with some more modern
indie stuff tossed in and a smattering of jazz, country and...
um... other stuff? Try it out. Maybe you'll like it. If you grew up
in the 90's listening to alternative, (98.5 in the bay area, before
it got bought out) then you'll probably get all nostalgic. That's
what I do.
FOOD!
I haven't liked seafood, but I'm trying to get over it. I can never
get enough breakfast. I like everything in between. I make an
awesome curry, and a few other things - I do a good spaghetti sauce
that I sometimes put in my lasagna. I BBQ tri-tip and make the best
fricking steak sandwich you've ever had. No bbq sauce. It's so good
you don't need it. I cook up a mean dutch baby in my epic-ly
awesome cast iron skillet.
When I'm eating out I tend to go for Thai or Mexican food.
Something spicy and interesting... There's a Jeffrey's burgers near
my place that's good - I put a little tabasco on the burger and
suddenly it's magical.
