My self-summary
I've just moved to Tokyo, having lived in Texas for some time. I used to live on Costa Rica where I was a Peace Corps volunteer and later a school teacher. Anyway, some things I find fun are jogging, going to art shows, going on day-hikes, visiting flea-markets, doing photography, onsens, vegetarian restaurants, haiku, cooking, tea, and so forth.
What I’m doing with my life
Recently joined the faculty of a university here in Tokyo, where I work as a geochemist. Apart from that, I am a big fan of literature and poetry, and occasionally write some myself. I also practice Zen and am part of a Buddhist sangha in the States. Places I've worked at as a scientist include: Japan, China, New Zealand, Central America, Antarctica, and Chile, but now just focusing on research in Japan.
I’m really good at
Cooking, gardening, writing, photography. Haven't done tai chi, yoga, or qigong in awhile, but enjoy those as well. I also have great fun at some things that I am really bad at, like ping pong.
The first things people usually notice about me
I would suppose my shaved head, since I was ordained as a Zen monk and most people in Japan don't have shaved heads. People probably notice fairly quickly that I am a warm and kind person, can be funny or serious depending on the situation. I am also a sincere person, who is not too complicated.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I am a big fan of Haruki Murakami novels, and am learning about other Japanese authors. My musical tastes are vary, and I like to listen to music while jogging, mostly latin-pop, some J-pop, jazz, and indy-rock. Favorite movies: O Brother Where Art Thou, The Scent of Green Papaya, and Exit Through the Giftshop come to mind. As far as Japanese movies, I've seen a few that I like:禅 (道元禅師), ノルウェイの森, 利休にたずねよ, おくりびと,南極料理人
The six things I could never do without
friends, coffee lattes, the moon and stars, the ocean, mountains and forests, zazen.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Living a purposeful life, observing the beauty of things, appreciating the interconnectedness of things.
On a typical Friday night I am
out dining with friends or reading a book.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I have a Ph.D. and admire inquiring minds, but at the same time, I generally avoid intellectual discussions.

  • Who are single

You should message me if
You live in or around Tokyo. Making friends with people from around the world is fine, but I'd much rather meet and get to know someone around where I live. Artistic inclinations are a plus, as is an interest in some form of spiritual practice. Feel free to message me if you are around Tokyo and would like to get together sometime over coffee or lunch, or to visit a museum, hike around a park or something like that.
