Cheap People
That was the one of hottest noon of April, Jagnnath was paddling his rickshaw with all vigor he had got but it was not gaining any speed, just moving like a lazy seal. Jagnnath had a lungi and a vest on his body, muddy brown vest, lungi too had lost its original color, couldn’t be guessed what must have been original color of his lungi and vest, his wheat colored face was shining covered with the dust, oil and sweat, his black hairs were scattered on his head, sunlight was torturing him, he could faint at any second, he didn’t had any food in his stomach from morning so his stomach was quarreling with him, was making sounds that only he could hear, and his other body parts were totally supporting his stomach after all they had a pretty close relation to each other but his mind was the rebellion one and it was not agree with others, was trying to persuade them “just wait few minutes and we will have money, I will feed you, just cooperate with me”. forehead, face, neck and vest totally soaked in sweat, but he was paddling in the hope that struggle would finish soon, hope is the one thing with which we humans can cross oceans, can conquer any fight, single thing that makes us survive in hard times, and probably reason of survival of human race.

A chubby, stumpy woman aged approx thirty was in back seat with her ten year old son, who was exactly her carbon copy , both were looking like hippopotamus, by fault of nature who got in human skin, not a single bone from their face or neck could be seen, in contrast not a single layer of fat could be addressed in Jagnnath’s skinny body, fat layers of fat were shining on their fat face and fat neck, their faces were shining in the beams of sunlight like etched boiled potato, they were also sweating, lady was continually wiping sweat from her face and then sweat of his child’s face with same handkerchief, and each time she was touching her son’s face he was struggling to get rid of her, lady adjusted her sari and stopped her kid from jumping out of rickshaw and said to Jagnnath.

“I am in hurry, can’t you paddle fast? Look, sunlight is scorching my child’s face”

He turned back at her and looked at her with a subdued, tiered expression that mentioned without need of saying a word that he was already trying his best.

“Ok, Ok, look there, that hoarding, Gupta Groceries, stop there, I will walk onwards”

Jagnnath nodded. They reached to hoarding; he stopped his rickshaw and helped both of them to unload from rickshaw, not only son but lady also needed support to get down.

“How much” She asked after getting down and again adjusting her sari.

“Just give me whatever you think is appropriate” he replied. She opened her small, shining, stone molded purse, fumbled through green five hundreds and hundreds rupee notes and took out a five rupee coin and offered him, his mouth opened with amazement effortlessly, somehow he stopped his tongue from firing an abuse, he refused money and as politely as he could say after pulling rickshaw half hours in burning sunlight he said “other rickshaw pullers charge twenty rupees, I was paddling from half hours, give me at least fifteen”

“Don’t you yell at me, you think I don’t know the rate, it’s my daily work of up down, don’t try to cheat with me, you roadside people think you can make fool of anyone, I know your tricks, how you cheat with the people, you think I am fool, I am an educated lady, I have made to colleges, I know how this world works, I am not giving you a single more penny, take it or leave”

He thought “leave, yes why not leave, how easily they say all time take or leave, I can’t leave neither I can take five rupees, I am not asking for charity I am asking for money that I have earned”

He said “No, you should have asked already about fare, if you had to do a drama here”

“Mind your tongue, Why would I ask, I know the rate, you want to see drama just wait few minutes, you want me to call my neighbor, their relative is inspector, you want to make a mess, Hmm” she took out her cell phone from her purse and begun dialing, he could hear beep , beep sounds.

He thought “police for ten rupees, will police come for ten rupees? I know they are enough mean but I don’t think they will come here for ten rupees although money is all they care, but what they will get and what I will , I paddled much, five rupees just not enough, I don’t fear anyone let them come, should I take five rupees? but Katori will ask for fifteen rupees for a Plate, what I can eat in five rupees and how I will work without eating ?”

“No, I am asking for right fare, I have sweated half hours in this sun not for five rupees, you were sweating just by sitting there but I was paddling….”

“so you wanted me to paddle, I don’t want to argue with you cheap people, cheap living, cheap thinking, cheap cloths, take it, this is last I can offer” she said and again fumbled through her purse and took out another coin of five rupee, she offered him both coins of five rupee.

He looked at her face and then again at coins in her hand and spat in one corner, and thought “Am I a beggar? Even beggars can make more money than me in half hours, again chapatti without Dal, in ten rupees she will not give me Dal”

He took both coins from her and turned his rickshaw back to katori’s pull-in, meanwhile an Ice cream seller passed with hooting sound of his horn, her boy begun jumping and crying “Ice cream, Ice cream” she took out and handed him a fifty rupee note and said “go, buy two Ice creams and that one of cup, of twenty rupee, I like that one, don’t try to buy that red two rupee one, that’s for cheap people”

Jagnnath heard and saweverything and began pulling back his rickshaw to Katori’s pull-in, on the way he was thinking “cheap people, yes of course, I am cheap because I ask for right fare, because I am rickshaw puller, I am cheap”

Jagnnath reached to Katori’s pull-in, parked his rickshaw with already parked rickshaws at ground, pull-in was in open sky, under a mango tree in the middle of ground, he approached Katori, black fat women was seated on an adherent piece of wrecks made of concrete, wearing a sari without any color, same as Jagnnath’s vest, she was making chapattis with her stove, already few people were seated on dais made of concretes, they were eating chapatti and Dal and were also conversing with each other, Jagnnath put both coins on ground beside her and sat down in a corner on dais, she was already yelling on her husband who was also seated there beside her, he was also a rickshaw puller. “Again drunk, drink all money, after leaving all shame and consideration I come here daily to make money so our children can live a good life, so they can get good study, at least they can do something in their life, look at you, look at your face, living on money earned by me, you have gone beyond shame, drink everything, sell your rickshaw, drink it, drink me, drink our children, the day is not far when we will find your body in gutter, make me widow ”.

“That’s all you pray, pray always for my death, you will know my value after I am gone” he said in his uncertain and drunken tone, he stood up and left. She looked at coins and rasped at Jagnnath “no, not ten rupee, fifteen, that’s rate of a plate”, few people giggled Jagnnath didn’t gave any focus to them neither Katori.

“Just give me chapattis and salt if you can give salt for free” Jagnnath replied, all people around looked at him, he looked at them too without any shame and stared them one by one, “eating of my money what you buggers looking, didn’t you ate only chapatti ever, what I am eating will never change what I am and I am a struggler, I am eating of my money , I have not cheated anyone, I have not begged, I have earned these chapattis” he thought. Katori took out a plate, put four chapattis and a spoonful salt and put plate before him. He took plate from ground held it in one hand and begun eating; he was sipping water after each bite of chapatti and was thinking “what about dinner? would I get proper food at evening, no saving for today that’s for sure, it have been four years but I have not saved enough money to buy a second hand auto rickshaw, what is my destiny? will I pull rickshaw all my life”. Katori was noticing him she yelled again “Jagnnath, come here” he approached her holding his plate in hand; she poured Dal in a bowl and put in his plate.

“I can’t pay for this”

“Your five rupees will not make me queen, go eat but this is last time I am giving you free Dal”

He took again his position, smiled and thought “cheap people, yes, we are cheap people”

By then, Rangeela another rickshaw puller, wearing shirt and pant of multi colors, a pink and violet handkerchief in one hand, properly combed hair with extra amount of oil, waived a fifty rupee note on face of Katori and said “give me extra Dal and rice too, if you have rice” everyone looked at him, he looked at Jagnnath, Jagnnath looked back at him and they smiled.

“Again won a lottery Rangeela, conned innocents again?” Katori asked with a cunning smile.

“innocents, everyone looks innocent to you, you think those high class buggers are innocent, that’s why you are still making chapattis on stove, don’t dream of your restaurant any more, either leave your dreams or change your thinking, I just conned them who conned others, who conned us, who conned you, who conned Jagnnath, A passenger, wanted to go meena Bazaar from goal crossroad, his motor caused some problem in middle of road, was unfamiliar with city, I took three round of same meena bazaar, he didn’t notice, then I asked for hundred rupees, he settled in fifty”

“You are a crook, you took fifty but fare is just twenty” she yelled.

“No, I am future, you cheap people will never understand, I will buy an auto rickshaw in one year, will be a rich man in two years, you know what he was talking on his cell phone, he was talking to his girl friend and they were planning to go cinema at evening and you know which one? PVR, three hundreds for two tickets, what I have done wrong? nothing, I have just used a small part of his money for something good, three hours will not change a thing for them but this money will change my life, will change my future, this is called better use of money, and if I am using his money for better, is not it good?, movie would con his three hundreds and three hours too, but I conned just fifty, look at Jagnnath, look how cheap he looks, how cheap he eats but he never cheated anyone and what he eats daily chapatti, look at you, the goddess of philanthropy, cheap goddess of cheap people, give me my plate, its worthless to talk you cheap people”

Jagnnath heard everything and again recalled the word in his head “cheap people” and smiled, finished his food, washed his hands and again turned back to his rickshaw, pulled his rickshaw to main road and begun waiting for another providence of cheap people.
