I am shy, social, and contradictory.

My Self-Summary

OK, the name. So I used to go by "spazatron" on all blogging and social networking sites, and I guess "spaztastic" is an upgrade? Either way, I'm not nearly as awkward as I pretend to be, but I like that little buffer of self-deprecation. (I'm trying to get by on my neurotic Jew charm—work with me here.) I graduated from Berkeley in 2008 with a BA in English, but I also studied Italian, film, sexuality, and even marine mammals. (It was for a bio requirement. Ask me about pinnipeds!) I identify as a homebody, but lately I've been going to the city on a fairly regular basis, to the extent that I now know most of the BART conductor personalities. Sometimes I feel like that uber-cheery woman is the only one who really gets me.

What I’m doing with my life

Right now I'm a freelance writer, which means I will pretty much write anything as long as you pay me. I'm the San Francisco City Editor for CultureMob, so I blog about artsy things to do in the Bay Area. Otherwise I'm a film critic for the SF Bay Guardian and contribute weekly to the 96 Hours section of the Chronicle. It would make me really happy if you read my stuff. Feel free to lie and say you did; I'll never know the difference.

My business card says I'm a "pop culturalist." I don't really know what that means, but it sounded a lot less whore-y than "private dancer," my first choice.

I’m really good at

finding the subtext in everything. Also, making out.

The first things people usually notice about me

might be that I look younger than I am. Well, I guess they don't notice that first, since it would require knowing my age. Instead, they say things like, "An Obama pin? Aren't you too young to vote?" I was 22 at the time. Incidentally, the person who asked that was Nina Dobrev from The Vampire Diaries. I don't watch that show, but it seems worth noting.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

My favorite English major-y author is Faulkner, but I also love Bret Easton Ellis, Stephen King, Kate Atkinson, and Chuck Palahniuk. When I'm in a non-fiction state of mind, I go for Mary Roach and Michael Pollan, as I live in the Bay Area and it's a requirement. I read comic books (Batman FTW), but only when they're released in collections, because I'm too lazy to keep up otherwise.

Movies. Um. I don't really have a favorite, but I mostly go for foreign steamy romances and gory horror films. I also love campy trash and sequels: Wild Things and Grease 2 have a special place in my heart. Pedro Almodóvar and Woody Allen are my favorite directors ever, so I'm inclined to love pretty much everything they make. For work, I'm often forced to see things I wouldn't normally be interested in, which means I'm actually open to anything by default.

I hate talking about what music I listen to, because I feel like I need to expand my musical horizons. For the time being, Jenny Lewis, Conor Oberst, and Ben Gibbard can do no wrong. Aside from douchey genres like indie folk and alt country, I also enjoy pop. I listen to 101.3 in the car, because I feel like Ryan Seacrest really gets me, and I'm absurdly excited about Adam Lambert. (Seriously. His existence thrills me.)

I'm not picky about food, but Indian and Italian are clearly the best. I am also partial to sushi.

The six things I could never do without

Loved ones, DVD collection (almost counts as a loved one), physical intimacy, computer (covers writing and the Internet!), Snuggie, and stuffed Spider-Man.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

what to read or watch next. It's seriously daunting.

I sometimes worry about what would happen if gravity stopped working. As a gay Jew, I have a constant fear of persecution, and who's to say the universe won't turn against us?

But if you see me looking spaced out, I'm probably writing an article in my head. Or thinking about sex. Or thinking about writing an article about sex.

On a typical Friday night I am

probably watching a Netflix movie at home, or drinking a whiskey sour elsewhere. I prefer one-on-one encounters to large parties, though the latter can be fun if I'm feeling sufficiently social.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I gave High School Musical 3 five stars on Netflix.

Also, I wish "Looking For" had a "Casual making out/cuddling" option, because I'd be all over that.

(This is my favorite section of people's profiles, which means I'm especially disappointed by cop-out answers. Is that a private thing? How meta.)

You should message me if

- you want to use me to get into film screenings/other events
- you think I'm cute
- you kiss on the first date
- you can help me practice my Italian
- you want to organize a reading party
- you're obscenely tall
- you also gave High School Musical 3 five stars, and you're sufficiently ashamed

Feel free to IM me—I'm usually pretty bored. If you want my AIM screenname, ask for it. Just know that I came up with it in 7th grade.
