I am more impressed, by a thous-, and words..

My Self-Summary

I'm intellectual and curious, and love puzzles and wordplay. Anything from a bad pun to a good simile.

I've been told I'm generous and funny, "and willingly I believe". I will elaborate on their behalf, and say that I'm kind & considerate, quirky, sarcastic, witty and just plain nice.

I'm into:
* cleverness, especially with language, word games & wordplay
* dry humor
* silly banter
* scrabble, boggle, jigsaws, all kinds of puzzles
and, most of all - reading (avidly, voraciously, constantly).

I'm ethnically/culturally Jewish and religiously an atheist (non-practicing). So, I'm not sure which to put on the 'skinny'.

I just got to NY last November. Before that, I spent three years in Scotland, getting my PhD.

What I’m doing with my life

I'm doing a post-doc in Computational Linguistics at Columbia. I'm trying to teach computers to understand language.

I’m really good at

Unsupervised Word Sense Disambiguation (my PhD topic). Baking. Recognizing people (but bad at remembering names, which makes for awkward meetings).

I enjoy trying random things, although I don't usually reach the 'really good' level. For instance: juggling, drawing, learning Spanish, playing the flute, archery and silver-smithing / jewelry-making (I'm actually pretty good at that last one).

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Authors: Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, Robin Hobb, George Martin, Michael Chabon, Guy Gavriel Kay, Lois McMaster Bujold, Neil Gaiman, Neal Stephenson, Steven Erikson, and many more.

Bands/composers: Fountains of Wayne (cleverest lyrics I know of), Barenaked Ladies, Fastball, The Wallflowers, Jonathan Coulton, Semisonic, Camera Obscura, and The Arrogant Worms. but I've been expanding the list with the help of last.fm. I also like classical - Mozart, Bach, Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade.

Movies/TV: The Usual Suspects, Fifth Element, LOTR, Back to the Future, Shrek, The Wire, West Wing, Firefly, Veronica Mars, 30 Rock

Comic strips: The Far Side, Calvin and Hobbs, XKCD

Food: dark chocolate, ice cream, cashews, hearty brunches, dark ales, good scotch, Thai, a nice steak.

Update: just discovered Michael Chabon is a fan of Fountains of Wayne! Made my day.

The six things I could never do without

books,
music,
intellectual stimulation,
an appreciation of irony,
internet access (I'm reaching, here),
umm, that's all, folks.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Grownup stuff - the next step in my career, relationships, the reasons online dating doesn't live up to its amazing potential.

Less grownup stuff -
How awesome my life would be if it came with a team of script writers (or just Aaron Sorkin), so I'd always be ready with a snappy comeback. While we're playing the wishing game, a soundtrack would probably be cool, too.

Random word stuff. For example:
* How to use words such as 'dastardly', 'ilk' or 'stint' in day to day conversation.
* Picturing a flight of stairs as a flight of swans. Escher would have had fun with that.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I was a nerd before it was cool and trendy, and I continue to successfully avoid any taint of (conventional) coolness.

I couldn't stop myself, and ate a significant number of snickerdoodles I just took out of the oven. Five, to be exact.

You should message me if

You are kind, intelligent, and laid back.
You're pondering what I'm pondering.

As a child, you had to be repeatedly told that it's not polite to read at the table. Bonus points if it's still applicable.
