My self-summary
I guess I should get this out of the way first. I currently live with my ex-wife. We still get along great and all that, but just not in the marriage sort of way. If this is weird to you, then I'm probably not the guy for you.

===================================

I'm a computer nerd who likes sports and has indie-ish music tastes.

I'm shy and spend a lot of time at home unless prodded, but like to think I'm fun to be around once out of my shell. I moved to MN from Tulsa, OK in April 2010 and am very slowly growing my social circle.

My main goal here is to meet new people to hang out with and/or date casually. Right now I think my ideal relationship would be a step or two past friendship. I'm not closed to something developing beyond that, but that's not really what I'm looking for.

I enjoy music, sports, reading, trivia (bar and any other kind), movies, crossword puzzles, and Scrabble.

I have a lot of old man characteristics. I enjoy reading the newspaper (ideally in paper form), CBS Sunday Morning, going on walks, and waking up early.

I like the idea of reducing one's possessions and have been slowly working toward that end.
What I’m doing with my life
I am a software engineer employed by Level 3 Communications and work from home. Ideally I'd like to work somewhere with an innovative workspace that fosters community and productivity. Ultimately though I would like to retire early to own my own business. Possible ventures: soap making, used book store, apple cidery.

In a more broad sense I am trying to better myself. This means losing weight (and being healthy), being productive, doing more things I enjoy and fewer things I don't and in general having a full life.
I’m really good at
I am really good at knowing things that most people would find unimportant. I'm usually good at keeping my cool and understanding things from other peoples' prospectives. I am pretty good at doing the New York Times crossword puzzle. I am good at analyzing problems and coming up with solutions (at least when it comes to software).
The first things people usually notice about me
Probably my curly hair. Also I am quite overweight at the moment (and have been for all but a year or two of my teen and adult life), but I am working to improve that. I probably usually have a guarded posture if I am at all paying attention to other people. I've been told I have nice eyes, but I don't really know anything about that.

Currently I also have a rather large, usually unkempt beard.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
I like The World According To Garp, The Song of Ice and Fire series, Cormac McCarthy, Chuck Klosterman, Michael Perry, Cat's Cradle, Neal Stephenson, etc, etc

Recent movies I have enjoyed are Moonrise Kingdom, The Cabin In The Woods, The Master, The Artist, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Safe House, Beginners, and The Guard. I like the Coen Brothers. I enjoy watching Hud whenever it is on and also like Touch of Evil. I like most Judd Apatow movies. Often I would rather watch TV than movies. I enjoy Mad Men, The Wire, Carnivale, Deadwood, Twin Peaks, ...

I also really like live comedy, though I don't go locally as much as I should. I went New York in 2012 and went to The Comedy Cellar twice and both UCBs. In early 2013 I'm going to SF Sketchfest.

Right now my favorite bands are probably T. Rex and Sparks. I also like Mastodon, TV On The Radio, Girl Talk, Ghostface Killah, The Lounge Lizards, MGMT, Beirut, Gogol Bordello, classic rock, and country music with a steel guitar. In general I can find something to like in just about any genre I can think of (though I'm not big into reggae). Good music is good music.

I'm a fat man and like a lot of foods. My favorite foods are probably Indian and Thai. Oh, and sandwiches. I also like foods with cheese. In general I like savory foods as opposed to sweet foods. In the past I rarely ate fruits and vegetables, but I am broadening my horizons.
The six things I could never do without
Solitude - I enjoy spending time alone. I like being around other people too, but if I go a while with some alone time I grow increasingly anxious.
The Internet - I discontinued my cable service and have been watching TV on Hulu, ESPN3, Amazon VOD, torrents, etc. I spend all of my work day on the computer so usually don't do much traditional internet-y stuff after hours, but for video and all the other services becoming more and more widespread it is indispensable.
Music/Comedy - I've been thinking about taking music off of this list. It's not that I don't like music anymore. It's just that it's not as important in my life as it used to be. Stand up comedy and podcasts have kind of taken that place for me. However, I recently resubscribed to Spotify and have been trying to keep up with music more actively than just listening to The Current in my car.
Sports - I like a lot of different sports. I watch a lot of tennis right now, but I love baseball, football, basketball, golf, curling, and anything competitive. That said I don't let sports control my life. I'm not the guy who "must" see this game or that game. I might obsessively check scores on my phone if in an appropriate setting, but I've spent enough of my life around people who dislike sports that I know how to keep it in check.
Trivia - I like playing trivia games, reading books of trivia and just learning new facts in general.
My Mind - I don't really like the idea of dementia.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
I've been thinking about how my previous entry here was kind of a bummer. I'll rewrite at some point.
On a typical Friday night I am
Usually I'm spending time at home, though I'm trying to get out more often. I'm not much for crowds and don't like crowded bars/clubs, unless a band I like is playing. If I'm going to go out on Friday night I prefer a laid back bar where I can actually have a conversation.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I have a desire to write something actually private here, but everyone else I know wrote something jokey.
