My self-summary
I'm a reasonably athletic, science-y guy with a slightly dark sense of humor. I like to 'do the right thing' whenever I can, and am pretty down to earth and utilitarian in my views. I try to avoid conflict, though will make a stand when it matters.

I got quite into 'mountains' during a uni. placement year in Switzerland - and since then have made an effort to escape for hiking or skiing holidays whenever I can. I prefer to spend my free time doing 'outdoorsy' activities. Though I do tolerate visiting cities and restaurants, I'm far more comfortable in a country pub after a day's walking.
What I’m doing with my life
Paying off my student loan???

I'm currently a software developer - honed for the optimal conversion of caffeine to MSIL bytecode - which I do for food and shelter (and of course the warm fuzzy glow we all get when a database functions correctly).

The dream is to break the shackles of salaried employment, and run my own small software business.

In the meantime - I'm reasonably happy to take someone else's money and go skiing with it :o)
I’m really good at
being above average :o)

Not a great one for boasting, but things I spend a lot of time practicing are swimming, cycling and running. I'm also pretty good at coding, and experimenting with porridge.
The first things people usually notice about me
I'm tall, which is a fairly obvious visible trait. I'm also appalling at recognizing new people, so I often suspect people think I'm being incredibly rude to them (when in actual fact, I'm merely oblivious... :o)
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books:
I tend to read popular science... so anything about evolution, complex systems and emergent properties, 'the mind', physics or maths will get read. If I'm honest, I'm not a huge fiction reader - though I do like Neil Gaiman and Douglas Adams, and I have been making an effort with the Game of Thrones books.

Movies:
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves - (Filmed around where I grew up, has a bizarrely comforting effect)
Terminator 2 - (Despite the annoying child)
Moulin Rouge - (Strange, completely heterosexual, thing for Ewen McGregor... and Nirvana mixed with the CanCan is inspired.)
The Fifth Element - (Amazing)

Shows:
Green Wing (quite a big fan of completely off the wall humor), Peep Show (also quite a big fan of David Mitchell)
Black Books (and Dylan Moran...)
How I met your mother (Strangely empathic towards Ted... though I can't believe they've dragged it out 9 seasons)
Big Bang Theory (if you can ignore the canned laughter...)

Music:
Placebo - (Every me and Every you)
Metric - (Gimme Sympathy)
The Postal Service - (Nothing Better)
Arcade Fire - (Ready To Start)
The Shins - (New Slang)
Muse - (Plug In Baby)
(Swedish) Basshunter - (DoTA - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXKd7uuehlw - just 'wow', on every level)

Food:
Very easily pleased in this respect, cheesy mashed potato or lasagne. Also a big fan of tomato juiced sardines within toasted bread.
The six things I could never do without
As far as material things go, I'm pretty adaptable, and 'never' is a strong word, however, fitness is important to me, so:
1) My bike
2) My trainers and
3) My swim gear
are pretty essential (lest I get grumpy...). I'm also pretty geeky - so:
4) My laptop
would be missed... and I get lost easily - so:
5) My GPS
makes me comfortable with my place in the world. And
6) My headphones,
because sometimes reality just needs blocking out.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
whether I ate too many potatoes at lunch... I probably did.
On a typical Friday night I am
trying not to be predictable....
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I actually quite liked Aqua....
