I am anfractuous, mercurial, and eggheaded.

My Self-Summary

I am attracted to the intricate mechanism of the world; if you've got that too, that's a fantastic place to begin.

What I’m doing with my life

Muddling around in something of a funk -- 2008 finished with a kind of bang-whimper, and I'm trying to regain my sea legs at work. I have too many ideas, and not enough time for them.

Doing aikido more and more.

Paring down my library (my housemates and I just moved and I'm using it as an excuse to simplify); I put one small set of bookcases in my bedroom and have it filled with books I'm committed to reading or rereading. Paring down my archive of personal papers, as well -- I'm still carting around 3.5" floppies from 9th grade, which by this time I have no computer capable of reading. Truly crazy...

I obsess about politics and nothing I've tried has cured me of it Barack Obama winning the election cured me of it.
Now in German
Ich lerne japanisch, weshalb mein deutsch so schlecht geworden ist. Ich studiere Aikido. Ich arbeite bei einer kleinen Software-Firma, die man vielleicht auch in Deutschland kennt, namens "Microsoft".

I’m really good at

Math. Languages. Aikido (well, I'm not really good at aikido yet, but in 30 years I will be). Faking it.

The first things people usually notice about me

When I have a beard, it's probably the beard. My brother and father and I all have reddish beards, even though our hair colors are brown, blond, and silver respectively. Genes are marvelous.

Nowadays, maybe the height, or the shoulders. Or since I recently stopped liking crowds so much they notice that I've retreated into a corner where there is controlled access and I only have to face a couple of people at a time.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Life, a user's manual. Visual Complex Analysis. Doktor Mürke's gesammeltes Schweigen.

Joan of Arc of Mongolia. Being John Malkovich. Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Music for a Large Ensemble (Reich). Vespers (Rach). Goldberg Variations (Bach).

Sushi. Cioppino. Buffalo wings. Cassoulet. Any non-meat antipasto.

Bonus category: My favorite quotations can be found at joxn.org -- if there's anything to be learned from a list of other people's thoughts that I greatly admire, you'll learn it there.

The six things I could never do without

Insulin, books, an internet connection, good cookware (and food to cook with it), two good pillows, aikido.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

High performance computing; politics; aikido; Buddhism; music; diabetes.

Our cyberpunk future, and how to make it a reality.

Simulating traffic and making computer predictions of future congestion, on supercomputers.

What I want to do next at my job, when we've moved on to version 3 of our product. (I've figured this one out, and the answer is: go to China for 6 months.)

On a typical Friday night I am

In the dojo from 6 until 9, then desperately hungry and looking for a place that will serve nutritious food late into the evening.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I'm actually self-conscious about answering this question, but ... here goes.

If you have a "key question" that it forces me to answer before I can message you, I almost certainly will not do so. Not because you're not great -- I could potentially even be very hot for you -- but because I've answered 1234 questions and I feel really, really uncomfortable about the idea of passing by such a beautiful number.

It's irrational, but there it is. But if you give me an alternate method to reach you I'll establish contact with you there.

You should message me if

the spirit moves you. there's nothing/no-one else tying you down...
