My self-summary
I like to think I'm a down to earth person, grateful for the things I have and happy to be a "worker among workers". My goals are to get out of my own way, think outside the box and do the next right thing. I am a graduate of Vassar College, having received an education which fostered in me a lifelong love for art, the humanities, and a concern for social justice. I also believe college isn't for everybody and I have met many talented and fascinating people who have found their way by different means. I don't know who to attribute this quote to but I like it's philosophy. "One hundred years from now, it will not matter what your bank account was, the sort of house you lived in, or the kind of car you drove.....but the community may be different because you were important in a child's life."
What I’m doing with my life
For many years now, I've worked as a therapeutic mentor with at-risk teenagers. The 60's philosophy of reaching out to those in need and not em-meshing myself in a materialistic lifestyle has always struck me as the right thing to do, or maybe just the way that seems to work best for me.
Done some traveling, mostly to Mexico, but have lived most of my life in the Berkshires, own a big old house which is in good repair but a lot quieter since my kids have flown the coop, not that they've been gone for long or moved that far away, they're only 21 and 22 respectively.
I've always been enamored of nature, worked in a green house for a while, and in recent years, I inadvertently developed a business as a landscape gardener which gives me an artistic outlet and a connection with clients, many of whom are very dear to me. ( If you want a recommendation as to what a great prospect I am, you should talk to Them!) I love being outdoors, swinging a shovel, and creating gardens which make people happy. When I can bring my dog, Mabel, with me to a job, life doesn't get much better.
I’m really good at
Listening, maintaining an air of wonder, digging in the dirt, giving my cat Joey his asthma medicine every day.........ugh!...and the usual womanly stuff like cooking and making my house a home! I want to say I'm good at keeping things in perspective but that's one of the things I miss about not having a partner.....that and kissing!
The first things people usually notice about me
That cute and friendly dog I'm walking---my cockapoo, Mabel.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
For years, when my kids were growing up, I described my life as a series of interruptions. Didn't sit down much. These days, I'm a constant reader (love suggestions) and like going to the movies more so when I have a date. Not a very accomplished camper but did take the kids to Falconridge a few time and always love to get to a live show. I've seen Barefoot Truth a few times recently, Keb Mo, Popa Chubby and the James Montgomery Band. Since recently getting a Nook, I'm hooked on cuddling up and listening to Pandora. Couldn't discuss a TV sitcom since Taxi but enjoy Netflix. Love all kinds of food, especially Mexican, Indian, Thai... lots of veggies, spicy, and hot. As with movies, half the fun of eating is in the company you keep.
The six things I could never do without
my kids, my dog, gardening tools, a clothes line, garlic, and balsamic vinegar..... oh, an honest car mechanic and a trustworthy carpenter make eight.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Thinking less and living more in the moment.
On a typical Friday night I am
watching a movie or reading. Live music is a big draw for me, as well. While not a fanatic, I do have an appreciation of sports and can get pretty crazy watching a Celtics game if I have someone to watch with.( I was captain of the cheerleaders in a past life!)
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
More often than not, my knees are dirty and. yes, I have way too many shoes......and I owe my own table saw.
