My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
My real name is Jonathan, but I go by John. Why the ‘h’? Just thought I needed a change, ya know? (I was 5). I’m optimistic, kind, confident (…I think), intellectual, clever, outgoing, and weird. Free-flowing, yet methodical (wavy?).

I can be sarcastic, but I try to keep it good-hearted and positive rather than cynical.

I sometimes have a difficult time expressing excitement, but I am generally a very happy person.

I'm....weird (?). Abnormal or atypical, I guess. In what respect? Well, I don't know, it is difficult to explain. Maybe like this: I'm a radical free-thinker with a strong basis for HOW I reason and think and about WHAT I should be reasoning and thinking.

My hometown is Oceanside, New York. I only lived there for the first 10 years of my life, but the accent still slips through, especially when I'm around my loud-ass family. We moved from NY to AZ, where I spent the next 12 years before moving to Santa Barbara for grad school.

I'm in an awesome (non-monogamous/monogamish*) relationship with SuperSeaStar. We're looking for more friends who respect our affinity for living and loving like this, so don't hesitate to message me about it!

*I stole this term from another profile. Thanks ETV!
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Working toward my phd in philosophy at UCSB. This will be my 6th (and maybe last!) year in Santa Barbara.

The better question: Why am I doing what I’m doing? I find it intellectually rewarding. I learn better ways to evaluate the world and I get to teach it to others.

I’m liberal, especially when it comes to human rights issues, though I’m not really "into" politics.

Reading a bunch, trying to finish my dissertation. Doing yoga to keep me sane.

Trying to learn to play a synthesizer and draw perspective. Slowly but surely getting better!
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Being reasonable AND empathetic.

Crypt of the Necrodancer.

Calling people out when they say ridiculous things in such a way that they might learn from it.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
Maybe my outspokenness. I can have fun in a social situation, but am very open and honest with people. Sometimes this comes off as a bit forward, or weird or whatever. But I always have good intentions.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Help your potential matches find common interests.
Books: Most of my time reading is dedicated to philosophical stuff (academic essays & books) so not much into reading novels. But if I had to choose one out of the embarrassingly small list of books I’ve read, then I’d have to go with East of Eden.

I love television because of it's ability, as a medium of art, to build on itself in ways other types of art can't. Some of my favorites are Justified, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Louie, Fringe, Last Week Tonight, Adventure Time, Comedy Bang Bang, The Wire, China Il, Flapjack (!!!), etc.

A few of my favorites movies are Adaptation, The Graduate, Primer, The Prestige

I cannot play music (though I wish I could) but I love it. More upbeat stuff is generally what I look for, but really my favorites are from a wide range of genres. Tom Waits, Sam Cooke, The Fiery Furnaces, The Thermals, Stars of the Lid, Fugazi, Ween, Beastie Boys, Akron/Family, The Magnetic Fields, The Pharcyde, Charles Mingus.

Pizza, Vietnamese coffee, Rainbow cookies, other foods and drink stuff.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
The people I love
Cigarettes (*I am officially striking this from my list. I can and plan to live without cigarettes in the near future)
This list (really though, the ability to analyze my concepts and build on it)
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Personal identity, what we know and how we know it, how to be a good person, art, people, emotions, patterns, self-reference, the kinds of things I should be thinking, the nature of intelligence, beauty, sex

How the world can be so boring sometimes when there is so much good in it.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Oh, I don’t know. Sometimes out with friends, sometimes in with friends, other times writing/reading.

(Hanging out with you!)
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I have a difficult time coming up with what is most private to me since I don’t really consider much private. I’ll leave it up to you. You can ask me anything (ANYTHING!) and I’ll tell you, I swear. Don’t hold back. If you can ask something I don’t want to tell you, I will bake you some cookies.
You should message me if
Offer a few tips to help matches win you over.
You want to teach me to play the piano or about music theory. You want to play chess over a cup of coffee. You want to play basketball with me. You want to take a walk to the beach and draw spirals in the sand.

You are a person who is sincere, honest, intellectual, and funny, but also really fucking weird in your own right. Artistic and open-minded. A person who is willing to question things that are rarely questioned. Someone who is not afraid to speak her mind, but can back that shit up.
Someone who will push me to be sillier, more light-hearted, and more artistic.

I intrigue you (at all!). Want to hang out and do something out of the ordinary.
