My self-summary
Self-promotion is awkward and it's really awkward when you're on an online dating site. So how about I just say some things about me that are true and we can take it from there? Great!

I like to travel and have done a lot of it, including to such tourist hotspots as Albania and Belarus. I've lived abroad a few times. I like to drink beer, probably because I'm of 100% German descent (parents, siblings all born there - just not me).

I wouldn't say I "like" exercise, but I find myself doing a lot of it, mainly by playing soccer, playing hockey, running and biking. I enjoy exercise when I am distracted from the fact that I am exercising.

Music is important to me. Given a choice recently between attending the State of the Union (see below for work details) and attending a Jason Isbell concert, I chose the concert.
What I’m doing with my life
I'm a reporter on Capitol Hill, which means that I follow around elected officials and ask them uncomfortable questions and then write about their answers for a news service. My life is EXACTLY like House of Cards.
I’m really good at
I'm a good writer. And even though OK Cupid didn't ask, it's probably important to acknowledge something I'm really bad at too (for the sake of balance). I'm really bad at salutatory kissing. Like when you're in France or Turkey or other countries where this form of greeting is common, I never have any idea how many kisses it should be, so I just stand there awkwardly and extend my hand. Then people say things about me in a foreign language and laugh.
The first things people usually notice about me
I'm very friendly. Like Minnesota-friendly, even though I'm from Pennsylvania.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
TV: The Americans, Breaking Bad, Friday Night Lights, English Premier League soccer on Saturday and Sunday mornings, college football (PSU grad and fan), House of Cards, South Park, Daily Show, Key & Peele, etc. I will watch the NFL but the amount of commercials is so over the top.

Movies: I have a shockingly accurate ability to quote movies such as A Few Good Men, Die Hard and Terminator, but my tastes do extend beyond those of a 17-year-old boy in the 1990s. I feel strongly that Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) and not Sean Penn (Milk) should have won the Oscar for best actor in 2008.

Music: Almost everything. Not country.

Books: Let's talk about James Joyce! It would be the most boring date in history, but I could do it!
The six things I could never do without
Beyond the obvious ones that any reasonable human being should probably mention -- family, friends, etc. -- I'd say that my life would be less enjoyable without Anchor Steam beer, the World Cup, campfires, flannel and bacon.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Wouldn't it be cool if I spent a lot of time thinking about solving major world problems, like hunger or Vladimir Putin? Instead I think about things like whether the local brewery is open for growler fills tonight, how to create an effective NCAA college football playoff system, how it's possible that the Metro sucks as badly as it does, and whether I could do some electrical work at my place by myself or need to hire an electrician who actually has some idea about such things. I also think a lot about what I would want for a birthday present if I were my 6-year-old niece or my 5-year-old nephew.
On a typical Friday night I am
At Da Club!

Just kidding. I would definitely not be at Da Club. I would probably be at Da Bar with some friends having a few beers and decompressing.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit that I'm on OK Cupid.
I’m looking for
  • Straight girls only
  • Ages 27–36
  • Near me
  • Who are single
  • For long-term dating, short-term dating
You should message me if
...this online dating profile has moved your very soul and you cannot, under any circumstance, live without me.

Also, that is a joke. It's sort of amazing how many people think I'm being serious with a statement like that.
