We bought a fixer upper hybrid.

Apr 20, 2011

After years of thinking it would be nice to have a hybrid here one is.  It is a non-operational 2002 Toyota Prius with moderate body damage.  In the past we have been able to get other neglected electric cars back into running condition so we took a shot and bought this one on the speculation that it could be brought back to good condition at a reasonable cost.

I am a green energy consultant and solar PV farm developer and I think that it will be good to show up to meet clients in one of the greener vehicles.

I am looking for other hybrids with problems so let me know it you have or know of one.

The costs of a failed democracy

Jun 22, 2010

I started writing this as an explanation for my answer to a match question.  It grew and I did not want to loose it so I put it here.

I am deeply concerned that big money in political campaigns combined with corporate controlled mass media (TV) have severely damaged our (USA) democratic traditions and processes.

Recently the US Supreme Court in the case of Citizens v. Federal Election Commission seems to have opened our fragile democracy to even further damage caused to the distorting effects of big money.  The decision allows corporations to use their funds to intervene in elections.  Privately controlled business entities that do not even have the right to vote now have the right to try to influence the decisions of voters using their vast financial resources.  This will do nothing more than to allow the monied elites to get a tax deduction when they use their corporations funds to further advance their private interests at the expense of the public interest.

The end result of these trends will be intra-national and international political violence as citizens are forced to use other means to seek the justice human dignity requires and the constitution guarantees.  As elite serving policies continue to be advanced by this money they will further unbalance our (US) ecological and cultural systems of survival the entire system will falter the system may fail utterly causing untold of pain, dislocation and death.

I believe that history shows democracy works so lets restore it at home (US) before the systems of survival we rely upon get to unstable to feed us.

Stream adventures

May 4, 2009

Today we found a large bird footprint at the edge of the stream. We used plaster of paris to make a cast of it. We also found the exoskeleton of a crayfish. Perhaps the crayfish was disturbed by the heavy rain /steam flow and a large bird ate it.

I also did about 70% of the design for a solar DHW system for a customer.
