I am tall, dork, and loathsome.

My Self-Summary

I like listening to and playing music, reading nonfiction and always trying to better myself. I like to have my mind and inhibitions challenged.

What I’m doing with my life

I just moved up to San Francisco from Los Angeles for work. I got rid of my car, but I don't think I'm ready to start saying "cheers."

I'm raising an amazing 8-year-old, and teaching myself as much cognitive science and music theory as I have time for.

I’m really good at

Enjoying something by reveling in its flaws.

The first things people usually notice about me

I'd rather cover something in depth than cover a lot of things superficially; I'm bad at small talk.

If I'm making wisecracks and being witty, I probably like you. If I'm agreeing with everything you say, I probably don't.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I read a lot of nonfiction, from essays to memoirs to science. Favorite nonfiction writers: David Foster Wallace, EB White, George Orwell, Stephen Pinker, Daniel Dennet, Chuck Klosterman, David Sedaris, Sarah Vowell.

I like quirky movies and especially quirky documentaries.

I liked The Wire so much that it ruined all other TV for me, but I'm still watching The Office.

I'm in the middle of a major 60s garage rock obsession: The Music Machine, The Standells, The Remains, Love, Electric Prunes, 13th Floor Elevators, Swamp Rats, Zombies. I've moved on to trying to collect singles from bands that never put out full albums. If you have a great recording of Cadillac by the Renegades, I'll buy you dinner.

I like healthy food, mostly vegetarian. I especially like Thai, Indian and Ethiopian.

The six things I could never do without

- Books. If I couldn't sit down and lose myself in a book, I'd -- well, I'd be lost.

- Music recorded between 1976 and 1981. Elvis Costello, the Ramones, the Germs, Joe Jackson, Television, Wire, The Buzzcocks, the Undertones.

- Conversation during sex. Fucking is sexy, but talking is intimate.

- My knack for not completing things; I'm never going to come up with six things for this list.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Making a lot of noise and getting very quiet to listen to the echoes -- you know, metaphorically.

On a typical Friday night I am

Every other Friday, I'm at home teaching my daughter something profoundly important or interesting that she is polite or curious enough to indulge.

The other Fridays, I'm drinking whiskey and trying to convince you -- or someone like you -- that I'm halfway smart and three-quarters interesting.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

If you find me politely agreeing with everything you say, I probably don't like you.

You should message me if

...if you can handle the fact that I stay home with my daughter every other night and you want to have some witty conversation over drinks or you want to float in a sea of noise at some horrible rock show.
