My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
I'm an award-winning whistler, finger drummer, Tetris player, and liar. I hate jokes and love uncomfortable situations.

I'm doing a PhD in ethics. This means I spend a lot of time teaching undergrads things they already know, and thinking about questions that you have to be a little weird to find exciting.

When the academic life seems too daunting, I like to comfort myself by remembering that I've always got my fallback career of being a rock star. I play piano, guitar, bass, and make electronic music. No awards for these, though.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I'm doing a PhD in ethics, which includes questions about value theory more generally (e.g. what, if anything, makes life worth living?) There's a tendency today to think that these questions don't have answers ("Nothing objectively makes life worth living, you silly goose!"), and part of my research involves looking at the implications of such views for how we should go about planning our own lives. Because I take it the question of what makes life worth living has a practical component (what kinds of things should I strive for in my life?), and I don't think we can really avoid engaging with this question. Fortunately, lots of people have said lots of really interesting things about this question, and I enjoy talking about them at length.

When not working on my PhD, I enjoy listening to and making music, drinking and becoming belligerent, short walks on nice days, learning about pretty much anything (I'm starting to develop a particular interest in history), and acquiring books that I'll totally read some day.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Having interesting conversations with people who have different viewpoints. It took a while to develop this skill, but I find if you try to listen charitably to people, they often have really interesting things to say, especially about ethics and politics.

I'm also pretty good at finding little things to be happy about. Showers, for example, are amazing. It blows me away that luxuriously-hot water is now only the turn of a knob away.

Probably that I look young. It seems to be the first thing bartenders notice about me, anyway.

Music: I like most types of music, but I've been on an electronic binge for several years now. Some examples: Aphex Twin, The Future Sound of London, Justice, Daft Punk, RJD2, Pretty Lights, Danger, Bonobo, The Flashbulb, Trentemoller, Burial, Holy Fuck, Ametsub, Clark, Submerse, Scuba.. But also: Radiohead, Nirvana, Gorillaz...

Shows: It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Firefly, Planet Earth, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, The Wire, Parks and Recreation, Lost (it was a good show, damnit!), Arrested Development, Rome, House of Cards...

Books: almost everything I read these days is related to my PhD. But I have plans. Big plans.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
out with friends, drinking responsibly.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I've been watching Grey's Anatomy with my little sister, and have discovered it's actually a pretty good show.
