I am silly, affectionate, and introspective.
My Self-Summary
Starting this with "I" makes me cringe a little inside, so this
very sentence helps get around that. Nice.
Films are my greatest passion, and if you were to follow me around
with a fly on the wall camera crew you'd spend a lot of time in
cinemas or
watching DVDs. This isn't to say that I'm only found staring
silently in darkened rooms; in the last ten months events that have
entertained me to varying degrees include comedy club nights and
full
stand-up
shows (Lee and Herring, Mark Thomas, Frisky & Mannish,
Russel Howard and Simon Munnery being favourites, and you owe it to
yourself to see Pajama Men if you ever get the chance); various
gigs with loads of
different bands and singers from Thomas Truax in a Hoxton pub and
Squarepusher at the Royal Festival Hall to Malcolm Middleton at the
ICA - check out the music list for an idea of what goes in between.
Visits to the Tates, National Galleries, Royal Academy, Swan Lake
and an excellent contemporary dance/acrobat show called Traces help
to add spice to the 'films/gigs/comedy' list, as well as the odd
thing that have happened upon me like the Sanctuary refugee
festival on the South Bank and seeing private gardens in the Open
Garden Square weekend. Then you've got the British Museum, Old
Operating Theatre and mental Booth Museum in Brighton to round out
the cultural smorgasbord.
All this and there was somehow still time to visit friends, go to
pubs and spend the odd evening
geeking out in front of my Wii and
360 at home.
See? If you do stuff like this already or want to do more like it,
you'll find a willing date in me, and you can see if we click
assuming you've made it past the fact that my head is obviously
shaved to mitigate the stealthy balding process, and the fact that
my chin and upper lip are decorated in various shades of browny-red
'tache and goatee.
Did you manage to get through that dense splat of text?
Stumbling
ungainly this far this without saying "I" outside of quotes is
going pretty well, I might just make it.
Shit.
What I’m doing with my life
Fighting a desperate and losing battle against tiredness. Caffeine
has become a nasty habit, and as I don't like coffee or tea I've
been trawling the shops for a more ethical alternative to diet
Coke, and something that doesn't make me as wired as Red
Bull.
Update: Irn Bru is my saviour! Not easy to find the diet stuff,
though.
I’m really good at
Finding new things I want to do and don't have time/money for at
the last minute so that few other people want to join me.
Staying up late.
The first things people usually notice about me
People tend to be surprised that I'm 31 and say they thought I was
about 26.
Fine by me!
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
My favourite book at the moment is probably I Am Legend by Richard
Matheson - I've got a weird fondness for dystopias and
post-apocalyptic tales.
But loads - Victoriana, David Peace, Philip K. Dick, Orwell,
Burroughs, Conrad, Hunter S. Thompson, Poppy Z. Brite, Graham
Greene, R. L. Stevenson, non-fiction (particularly history and
politics). Oh, and Chris Ware, absolutely.
There are far too many movies to choose just one favourite, but I'd
probably say that Jaws, Children Of Men and Sympathy for Mr.
Vengeance are up at the top for me. Screwball comedies, decent
vampire films, post-apocalyptic sci-fi, everything else.
Just loved Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. Next: Germany Year
Zero at the BFI.
It would be easier to list music I don't like, but I listen to
everything from heavy metal and drum and bass to delta blues, jazzy
trip-hop, bluegrass country and electro singer/songwriters. I'm
more of a magpie than someone with their finger on the pulse,
though.
Short list? Dillinger Escape Plan, Radiohead, Beirut, Dismemberment
Plan, Squarepusher, Bat for Lashes, Malcolm Middleton, Ghostride,
Devotchka, Nine Inch Nails, Bjork, Robert Johnson, Arab Strap, Red
Snapper, Szeki Kurva, Me Without You, Tool, Girl Talk, Michael J.
Sheehy, Pulp, Boy Sets Fire, Portishead, Chet Baker, Aphex Twin,
Sebadoh, Nina Simone, Jonah Matranga, Ultraviolence and the odd
song produced by Timbaland.
And the almighty Clutch.
Also; curries, Italian, other stuff.
The six things I could never do without
Tactile sensation.
Laughing.
Loved ones.
Music.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Existentialism; the objectivity of morality; sex; whether seemingly
intelligent people with racist/sexist/certain right wing views
actually know the 'truth' but have ulterior motives; the best ratio
of vanilla vodka and diet cola; the social and economical
implications of the legalisation of recreational drugs. Why I can't
make myself go to bed at a 'reasonable' time.
On a typical Friday night I am
Knackered from going out too much in the week; it's always a good
idea at the time.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit here
One of the first albums I bought was To the Extreme by Vanilla Ice.
Shut up, I was young.
You should message me if
You find that you usually have too much to do, or want more to do,
and would like to do some of it with me.
Or you like live comedy, trying out new cocktails, watching films
and swearing.
