it's an unbalanced load, and when i get to the landing i set it down, and suddenly a moth flies out of the dark and into the light of the porch lights and into my face.
it startled me, and my instinctive reaction was to swat. i swiped my hand and made direct contact, knocking the moth to the ground.
the moth lay on the ground, paralyzed or possibly dead. i'd love to be proven wrong, but moths are not inherently aware of human beings as far as i know.
they are (relatively) simple creatures attracted to (relatively) simple stimuli, such as light.
this particular moth was minding its own business, blissfully unaware of my existence, heading towards its light, when it accidentally startled a (relatively) superior being, who incidentally acted in self defense.
it could happen any or all of us.
did i mention i read a lot of philip k. dick?
