My self-summary
I'm just this guy, you know?

I try to live by two very simple rules:
1. Don't be a dick.
2. When in doubt, see rule 1.

I love books and the illusion of time they represent.

I'm ISTJ for whatever that's worth. I'm an introvert; I find crowds, large groups and most social situations emotionally taxing.

I like making lists and plans; I find them comforting. I also find it bothersome when there is gross deviation from established plans.

I dare do all that may become a man; Who dares do more is none.

Things I do to fill my free time:
Bicycling: I used to ride 60+ miles a week before moving to San Antonio, now I'm lucky to ride once or twice a month.

Running: I was running track and have since transitioned to distance running. I'm working up to a 5k and from there, who knows; I might try for a half-marathon.

Audio Recording: I used to work in a recording studio, now I just do small jobs on the side. I'll record the odd high school band/orchestra/choir contest. Recently, I've been working on an indie short film and helping a friend master his band's latest album.

Indoor Rock Climbing: I'm not very good at it (doesn't help that I don't care for heights) but I enjoy bouldering and the challenge of figuring out routes and footing.

Music: For 7 years I played trombone, tuba and baritone/euphonium relatively seriously (marching band, concert band and orchestra). Now I just play for nostalgia and try to keep my trombone chops in shape

Gaming: I enjoy games of all sorts. I don't get to play video games all that often, but when I do I usually wind up playing Borderlands, Portal, Left4Dead, Half-Life (pretty much anything from Valve) or Dragon Age. Friday night is typically game night; my friends and I play lots of board games and RPGs like Settlers of Catan, Small World, 7 Wonders, Pandemic, Warhammer 40k, PathFinder, Legend of the 5 Rings (L5R)....

If you've made it this far, thank you for dropping by and thank you for investing the time.
What I’m doing with my life
I'm an electrical engineer working for an independent, nonprofit, applied research and development organization. I love my job; I work with amazing people and get to work on a lot of diverse projects.
I’m really good at
putting a lot of effort into minute details. I have an aptitude for things mechanical and electrical (hence why I became an engineer). I like taking things apart to see how they work and then putting them back together. If I can improve it along the way, even better.

I have very eclectic taste. I used to play trombone, tuba and baritone/euphonium (still play trombone every once in a while for nostalgia sake), so I have a predilection for classical/baroque music and brass/wind ensembles. Imogen Heap, Arcade Fire, Beatles, Coldplay, Keane, Tool, Between the Buried & Me, and The Devin Townsend Project (and the various Devin Townsend offshoot projects) are among my favorite artists. I particularly enjoy listening to metal, electronica, and video game soundtracks while programming or writing.

The Alton Browncast, Jonah Raydio, The Nerdist, Welcome to Night Vale, The WhoreCast, Nerd Poker, Radio Free Burrito, Sex Nerd Sandra, and Still Untitled: The Adam Savage Project.

German, Indian and sushi (sashimi, nigiri) are my top three. I also enjoy Cajun, Vietnamese, Italian, Greek, Lebanese, soul food, etc.
The six things I could never do without
1) swiss army knife
2) basic set of electrical tools (wire cutters/strippers, soldering iron, volt/ohm meter and if we're feeling fancy, an oscilloscope)
3) basic set of mechanical tools (screwdrivers of various sizes, pliers, wrenches, sockets and socket drivers, etc)
4) my engineering textbooks
5) allergy medication (better living through chemistry)
6) an interesting problem/challenge to ponder
I spend a lot of time thinking about
...whether I'm doing this whole life thing wrong. society (especially American society) arrived at its current state.
...who am I and what do I really want out of life.
On a typical Friday night I am
trying to put a dent in my backlog of reading or playing games (board games, card games, pen and paper RPGs, the typical stuff you see on TableTop) with friends and co-workers.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I intensely dislike small children. I have profound difficulty tolerating my friends' children. If that makes me a bad person, so be it.

I am a model train enthusiast; I have a small layout of H.O. scale Marklin in my living room.

I mentally rehearse what I'm going to say before making phone calls.

I agonize over my writing. I overanalyze every word and phrase trying to anticipate all the ways they could be interpreted and misinterpreted. I obsess over spelling and punctuation. It takes me 20 minutes to fire off a one-line email to my manager telling him I'll be in an hour late next Wednesday morning. Makes for great technical documents, though.
