I'm poly, though my dance card, as they say, is kind of full at the moment. Mostly looking for friends.
I'm from Odessa, Ukraine, from the former Soviet Union. Immigrated to the US when I was 11 (a few years before the Wall fell). What does that mean for my day to day life? Not much. I don't have an accent (unless I'm drunk or tired), and I blend pretty seamlessly. There are occasional gaps in cultural background ("You mean you didn't watch the Muppets when you grew up?" Well, I have now. Stuff like that), and my friends get to make fun of me for it lightly. And I can still speak, read and write Russian (though that last one, not so well).
I was a geek growing up. You know how it is, video games and computers and BBSs and Star Trek TNG and D&D and so on. I loved it; I think it worked out pretty well. Majored in Computer Science, married my highschool sweetheart out of college, went to work as a programmer.
I think about all the small tribes that we create around us, all the time. Gaming groups, poker nights, book clubs and so on. I love people, and always pay attention to connections between them. While living in Cleveland (which I did until I was 30, strange to think), we gathered several such groups around us. But people drift apart, sometimes there's minor drama, groups form and dissolve. Again, you know how it is.
I've been through a lot of changes for the past 5 years or so. Changed cities, changed jobs several times, changed spouses, friends circles. Went on a cross-country tour with a brilliant pair - a musician and a writer.
I work in software development/distributed systems. I'm married to my favorite novelist and poet (she's thelearnedcat on here). I live on a small island that's a 20 minute ferry ride from a big city, with cats and dogs and chickens and a garden. I love my life fiercely.
I'm obsessed with good books (fantasy, scifi, nonfiction), with games, with TV and anime, with sailing and snorkeling, with friends and community, with programming, with tech, with the Buy Local movement and sustainable agriculture. I go to a lot of conventions (mostly literary cons, but also tech, and general media/anime/gaming ones). And a whole lot of other things. I live and breathe obsessions.
I am sincere, but not gullible, and I know how to wear a skeptic's hat. My secret power is seeing the awesome sides of people, even if those sides are hidden. (I'm also realistic -- look, everybody is fucked up in some way, and so am I, who cares.)
