I am smart, driven, and caring.

My Self-Summary

I'm a grad student in chemistry here at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I'd love to find a guy who understands my busy schedule but can distract me when I need a break. I grew up in the mountains of West Virginia and went to undergrad in Kentucky, so trust me, I've already heard (and probably witnessed) all the redneck jokes. I play hockey and am a former swimmer and band geek (I say former, even though a little part of that never dies). Feel free to contact me, and I'll try to respond soon!

What I’m doing with my life

I'm currently pursuing my PhD in Inorganic Chemistry. I originally started down this path because I was planning to go into teaching, most likely at a small liberal arts college, like I attended for my undergrad. Recently, however, I've started reconsidering, largely due to the monotony I've already noticed in just TAing two semesters of Gen Chem. I'm not sure I could teach the same subject for years on end, so if anyone has any other suggestions for what I can do instead, feel free to tell me. Sadly, my fallback plan at this point is to go for even more schooling, this time in Library Science. I've really just always loved books, so I figure I could dedicate my life to them if this chemistry path doesn't work out (but I'm on track so far with it, so no official plans are being made for library school yet).

The first things people usually notice about me

Probably my smile. As you can see in my picture, it's pretty prominent, and it tends to spend a lot of time on my face. I certainly have my orthodontist to thank for the smile that I have; I had what they referred to as a "cross-bite" beforehand. Later, my orthodontist became my swim coach too, so there was a bit of an additional connection there. Believe it or not, I like going to the dentist.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Such a broad question... Favorite authors are Diana Wynne Jones, Philip Pullman (the Sally Lockhart trilogy is FAR superior to the His Dark Materials trilogy), and Trudi Canavan. I also enjoy the Harry Potter books and a variety of other literature, too. Favorite movie is Rat Race, and I tend to like comedies the most. I recently got Netflix, so I'm exploring a variety of other movies now too. I'm not terribly picky on my music, although I hate rap and am not a big fan of country, either. Food-wise, Mexican (authentic, Tex-Mex, Chipotle, Taco Bell...I really don't care which type) is definitely the best, probably followed by Italian. Not a big fan of Indian food, but that's not to say that I never eat it.

The six things I could never do without

Milk, cheese, my computer, TV, my skates, and my bike.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

What I'm doing with my life. I contemplate whether or not I'm doing the right thing with my life, studying chemistry, going to grad school, etc. I considered a few different career paths while growing up, starting from my early childhood dream of being a policeman, which ended around age 5. At that point, I decided I wanted to be a lawyer, which lasted until I was about 16. Then I realized I wanted a math-based career, which led me to accounting, which I thought I would pursue until I started college, and I realized that chemistry is also a math-based career. So here I am in grad school, having finished my undergrad, still doing chemistry. I definitely enjoy it, but sometimes I ask why I never decided to become a librarian, which as I said above, is definitely my fall-back plan.

On a typical Friday night I am

doing one of a few things. When there's a Badger hockey game, that's where I'll be. The same goes for Badger volleyball games, when they're in season. On some Friday nights, you may find me at the Shamrock, where I'll probably be hanging out with some of my friends from the hockey league. On the rest of the Friday nights, I like to spend the night at home, watching tv or movies, trying to recover from the week's events. Grad school is really just too tiring sometimes...

Anyway, I would love to find someone to spend my Friday nights with, whether I decide to spend them in or out (although in would be a lot more fun if I had someone to keep me company).

You should message me if

anything here interests you. I'll probably answer, so what do you have to lose?
