My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Six years ago I moved to San Francisco from Chicago for grad school and I haven't grown tired of it yet. It's a great city, with just the right dose of metropolitan charm. Big enough for 81 bus lines but small enough for 1 area code -- a perfect-sized pond with some strange fish. Plus, after living through a few Midwest winters and the Arizona desert, I think this climate's just about right.

I grew up in a big and very odd family out in the East Bay. We couldn't watch TV, and we always had at least two German Shepherds and Volvos in the garage. Also, we didn't take regular vacations. We took "surprise day trips" to weird locations around Northern California. Like a cheese factory. And a hydro-electric power plant. And back to the cheese factory.

It was more fun and less emotionally scarring than that sounds.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I'm an adjunct professor at a couple of universities in the South Bay. I love the work. It's challenging, gives me time off and, technically, I can refer to a finalist for the Nobel Laureate as a "co-worker." Having a captive audience is pretty great too.

Off campus, I'm working on a novel and my jump shot.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Finding lost items. No idea why. Also really great at losing things.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
My massive forehead tattoo. Kidding.

You shouldn't judge a book by his covers, but ...

Rock Springs & Independence Day by Richard Ford, Where I'm Calling From by Raymond Carver, Complete Stories by Flannery O'Connor, Lolita, A Confederacy of Dunces, Slouching Towards Bethlehem, Ron Carlson, Alice Munro, old unfinished to-do lists, etc.

Movies: Boyhood, Chinatown, Cool Hand Luke, Gomorrah, Safemen, Dr. Strangelove, Up in the Air, A Streetcar Named Desire, Marx Brothers, badly plotted teen comedies, youtube clips of bears landing on trampolines, etc.

Music: Things that sound nice and the usual, unusual suspects. Broken Social Scene, Roots Manuva, Velvet Underground, Modest Mouse, Cat Stevens, Andrew Bird, Sam Cooke, Animal Collective, Ghostface, Louis Prima, Chopin. There are others.

TV: It's not as bad as you think. Really.

Food: I love it, and not just because it keeps me alive. Some favorite San Francisco restaurants: Salt House, Range, La Taqueria, Pizzeria Delfina, Swan's, many more.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
Bubbly water, friends & family, a comfy chair with a good view, most of the periodic table of elements ... indoor plumbing is pretty great. More wishes.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Wondering if it's all become too typical. Thanks, OKCupid.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I lost my appendix, and I have no idea where it is.
