I am passionate, quirky, and sweet.

My Self-Summary

Analytical but disorganized.

Frank but a subtle sense of humor.

Somehow, I manage to get it all together.

Sometimes I can talk someone's ear off, other times I have no idea what to say. I find meeting people from OkCupid tends to make it harder to talk - it's much easier to talk to people you meet randomly without evaluative pressure.

What I’m doing with my life

Yoga

Singing in a choir.

Getting started at beginning electronics-blinking lights and noises.

Marveling at analog synthesizers.

Coveting theremins.

Occasionally cooking for Food Not Bombs, occasionally hanging out at petanque at the french legation

Comparing notes.

Weighing options, wondering if I should move to a bigger city with more museums and better public transportation like SF or DC.

I’m really good at

Getting by.

Gentle sarcasm.

Word play.

Defending the downtrodden.

Critical analysis of research studies.

Picking up languages.

Trenchant observations on status relationships and their relationship to testosterone. (It's what I studied in grad school.)

Menu planning.

Surprising people.

The first things people usually notice about me

My green eyes. But usually they think they're blue.

Recently they've seem to notice that I'm shrinking. I've gone from being a big girl to a somewhat less big girl. One of these days I'll get a current full-length photo on this profile.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Music: Gershwin tunes of all stripes, old vocal jazz, a lot of New Wave (by both definitions), 80s music in general, even some classic rock and current pop. A list in no particular order: Nina Simone, the Police, The White Stripes, The Smiths, The Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, Joy Division, New Order, Wings, the Beatles (hey, I told you this was in no order), The English Beat, Donna Summers, The Stranglers, The Stone Roses, Jimi Hendrix, R.E.M., Kate Bush, Velvet Underground, Leonard Cohen, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Henry Rollins :), Janis Joplin, Poulenc, Satie, Debussy, Yazoo, The Specials, the Missing Persons, the Go-Gos, Violent Femmes, maybe a few old Madonna songs, Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry, Laurie Anderson, Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam, Bow Wow Wow, The Psychedelic Furs, Fergie, The Greatful Dead, early Floyd, yadda yadda yadda. Current fav is a cute youtube ukelele cover vid of Britney Speares' Toxic.

Film: Directors: Almodovar, 1970's Woody Allen, Hanif Kureshi, Merchant (and Ivory - so sue me, I like chick flicks), Richard Curtis, Tim Burton. Films: Bliss, Annie Hall, All About My Mother (oddly, I relate pretty strongly to the mother character), Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down, Talk to Her, Hedwig and the angry Inch, Belle Epoque, Like Water For Chocolate, Heathers, Sammy and Rosie Get Laid, Henry and June, and Harold and Maude. I'm sure I'm missing something critical.

Food: Right now, I'm on a kick for anything South East Asian. My personal economics right now dictate that I'm going to have to stay home and cook more, but I'm looking forward to the challenge. Got a cookbook for Christmas I plan on cracking open in a week or two. Right now, there is no Malaysian food in Austin...but there will be some soon in my kitchen. Next up is American Chop Suey, though...if you know what that is...message me.

Books:
Shoot, I can't even narrow it down to authors, let's try genres. I like some fantasy and science fiction. I like the Harry Potter series, though, and I love Varley and LeGuin. I've read a lot of social psychology because that's what my degree was in. If you've read any Gladwell or Goleman or anything like that, you get the idea. And I like Russian authors for some reason, especially Dostoyevsky. I have a huge stack of books I'm going to read..any day now...once I finish my organizing and cleaning projects. Some favorite writers: Phillip Lopate, Catullus, Judith Martin, Louise Fitzhugh, A.A. Milne. Oh and yes, I like Murakami and Jane Austen, as everyone seems to.

Video/computer games (although I suck, for the most part): Centipede, Hack, Tetris, Freecell, Snood, Rock Band.

Anime: My 3 favorite are Ranma 1/2, Kare Kano, Lain. I also like Unico, Urusei Yatsura (but I prefer it with a full set on liner notes), Kimagure Orange Road and Totoro (anything by Studio Ghibli, really). I like shoujou - can you tell? But mechanized armored robot suits don't do it for me. Sowwy.

How far can we take this?

Colors: Red, blue, green

Lamp designers: Tord Boontje, Ingo Maurer, Phillipe Starck (and Tiffany, dammit)

Kitchen gadgets: Alessi

Etc., etc, etc.

The six things I could never do without

My sense of humor.
People I care about.
My cat.
That's about it.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Social structures. Gender, gender roles, etc. Stigma and stereotypes. I studied social psychology in grad school. I am interested in hormones and personality traits.

When I'm going to slow down long enough to get through my books and practice the guitar.

What is so annoyingly addictive about the Hatchlings application on Facebook.

Different ways to incorporate Jesus into a meal plan so I can text it to my friend Chris. Examples: Kung Pao Jesus, Jesus Guisada, Jesus in a blanket...you get the idea. He's getting harder to beat, having come up with Drunken Jesus with Glass Noodles last week. Still, I persevere.

On a typical Friday night I am

Out. Sometimes I see a show, sometimes I go to the B-scene, sometimes dinner, sometimes a coffee shop. I strongly prefer to go out on Friday nights, unless it's because I'm cooking and having a bunch of people over. When the week is done, I want to see people and music and lights. I'd love to date someone who felt the same way. Even better, I'd like to meet someone who has ideas for cool things to do that don't cost much. Suggestions?

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I'm not interested in dating just for the sake of dating lots of people. I'm only interested in dating if it has the potential of becoming a committed long-term relationship.

However, I do know that while I do a family, I don't want a traditional marriage-kids-suburban life. I think the suburbs can be kind of bad for kids - it's harder for them to get around independently and harder for them to be exposed to as many rich cultural experiences. I find the nuclear family as it exists in America right now too constricting and stultifying. I'm not sure monogamy is a great idea. I haven't written it off, but it seems to have so many problems with it. I think it's too bad the extended family has broken down and I'm not sure what we can replace it with. I want to still be my own person and expect the same of anyone I'd be with.

What does this mean? For the moment I identify as polyflexible. What this means to me is right now I don't want it assumed that I'd be immediately monogamous with anyone. In the long run, it means that I value intimate relationships and am open to being committed to more than one person, being with someone who is with others. I like the idea of eventually having an extended family this way.

However: if I meet someone absolutely phenomenally compatible with me, I'd be willing to consider monogamy. This would only be with someone who is okay with my close relationships with ex partners and my friends. I hug and cuddle my friends and tell them I love them, and that includes an ex boyfriend. It would *not* mean that if I were in a serious relationship with a poly person, that I would ditch them for the monogamous one, because I just don't play that way.

Any questions? Feel free to ask.

Oh yeah, if you're any of the following: a little bit younger than me, you're trans or you cross-dress, have chin length hair, nerdy glasses, pale skin with dark hair, or play the cello, or dig synthesizers net win. Dunno why (ok, the last two are just cool) but I seem to find those traits shiny. But I've been interested in people who have none of those traits, so if you think I'm cool, message me anyways - I'm open-minded. I hate being pinned down (um...metaphorically.)

You should message me if

You are a feminist and label yourself as such. (If you aren't... just... don't... bother.)

You want to hang out with the sort of person that will end up getting into funny situations like drinking Bud Light with the Mexican Morrissey, rocking out with Moby, behaving inappropriately at Sean Lennon with an umbrella, telling the drummer from the English Beat that he smells good, or just chatting - with Barney Frank, with Richard Stallman about his fear of plants, Andrew Weil and 3 different presidential candidates. Because I have. (And Julia Child. But she's gone to the great pot au feu in the sky now.)

You've read the ENTIRE profile.

You are a light or non-drinker/smoker - I prefer to be with someone who is good at moderation.

You are any race or height, because I really don't give a damn.

You are somewhat flexible about body type, because mine is changing. If you only date BBWs, you may be disappointed in a few months.

You have kids - single parents welcome.

You know how to translate my user name into English.

You know where my keys are.
