I am courageous, humorous, and independent.

My Self-Summary

Let's start with career. I write comic books. No, not draw. I just write them. That means I'm the guy who sends a script to the artist with stuff like...Page One, Panel One: Close-up on a guy staring at a computer screen with a dull quizzical look on his face. The computer screen has OkCupid on it. Thought bubble: What the hell do I write under self-summary? And it also means I spend hours agonizing over coming up with realistic sound effects for the letterers. Does wheeHeeHee sound like a horse neighing? I just don't know anymore. Aside from working on that, I started my own company a few years ago to self-publish some of my own comics and I also do freelance work--everything from sports and entertainment to travel and food for magazines and websites. I run everyday and ride my bike a lot. From the Philly area originally. And I'm positive there's a taste difference between the different colors of peanut M&M's but my success rate at detecting which is which is only about 10%.

What I’m doing with my life

Traveling a lot. Or at least I was until a few months ago. Damn exchange rate!

Does finally watching all 254 episodes of Buffy and Angel over a span of eight months count as doing something with my life? Thought not. What about now getting caught up on the Buffy and Angel comics? No?! So I guess voting for the worst when American Idol returns won't count as anything either? Hang on...I AM doing something productive. If you count something productive as scouring the internet for every rare live track ever recorded by Bell X1--one of the best bands ever. I recommend the version of Bad Skin Day recorded live on RTE and Next To You and I'll See Your Heart from the October 2008 Cork Ireland concert. When I put all that stuff together in a nice little paragraph it looks like I'm doing a lot.

I’m really good at

Playing the drums since I've been playing more than 20 years. I'm not really good at the mandolin since I haven't been playing anywhere close to 20 years. But I have mastered an acoustic mandolin version of Portishead's Roads. And that has to count for something, right? I've even got the long intro from their Roseland concert down.

I'm also good at somehow managing to grow plants that aren't supposed to survive indoors while simultaneously killing cacti over and over.

And using the same small can of pumpkin to bake both pumpkin bread and pumpkin cheesecake every year at Thanksgiving. It's a skill. Trust me.

The first things people usually notice about me

Depends on the people and the situation. When I was doing a lot of boring office temp work, every employer and job interviewer thought I wouldn't be happy sticking around. I'm proud I gave off that vibe immediately. Of course when my goatee was much longer than corporate America likes, they also noticed that my goatee was much longer than corporate America likes :) It helped keep me out of cubicles.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

Favorite music: All genres. I'm a huge Springsteen fan and think everything Nick Cave does is absolutely amazing--from his ballads to his instrumental scores to his sixteen-minute videos. After those two...if you're familiar with the eclectic mix played on Sirius' The Spectrum or the music used on the TV show Homicide...everything from Live and U2 to Portishead and Lacuna Coil to Philip Glass and Lisa Gerrard. Plus Bell X1.
Favorite books: Harry Potter & Lord Of The Rings. After that, Gulliver's Travels, Count of Monte Cristo, Homicide and The Corner.
Favorite movies: Braveheart, Star Wars, Aladdin, Office Space, Rocky, Home Alone, Unbreakable, & Gladiator to name a few.
TV: Lost, BSG, Homicide, Survivor, Cheers, Simpsons, The Wire, and trashier stuff like Springer and Celebrity Mole.
Comics: Marvel--almost everything until the late 90s, especially X-Men, Spider-Man, Moon Knight, and Daredevil. DC--Batman & Green Arrow. Independent--Arsenic Lullaby is brilliant. Favorite all-time stories are the original Crow, Frank Miller's Daredevil mini-series, and X-Men Age of Apocalypse.
Food: It was always pizza until I worked in a pizza shop for a few years and pretty much lost my taste for it.

The six things I could never do without

Comic books, music, peanut butter, tea, Thanksgiving dinner. Six things?! That's just too much pressure.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Work. I'm lucky to be doing something creative that I enjoy so I put a lot of time into it.

On a typical Friday night I am

If I've got a book or article due on Monday morning, then I'm probably chained to my computer with a big pot of coffee. Otherwise dinner...movie...what kind of answer are you looking for? I'm saving the whales because my typical night to save the rainforest is Thursday night. Judging by the number of my neighbors doing their laundry on Friday night, I don't think anyone is doing that. "I'm 30 years old, damnit! And I want to sit in a comfortable chair, and watch television and go to bed at a reasonable hour!"

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I've been rejected from Survivor............multiple times. Yes. I've actually applied. And been rejected multiple times. I promise there was a VERY rational explanation.

And I'm here for the same reason as everyone else. It's become damn near impossible to meet new people in this world, let alone someone who seems intelligent and interesting and genuine. Everyone works as a teacher or a vet or in a cube and they only come into contact with kids or animals or paperwork. The majority of my work is done out of my apartment working with artists and editors that are on the west coast or overseas. And a lot of it involves long hours and short deadlines. Not the most productive way to meet people.

You should message me if

You think we have something in common or something to talk about. How much do we need to have in common? No clue. According to this website, I'm now only 96% compatible with myself. Used to be 100. Not sure what I did to piss myself off. Must have gotten confused and answered one of their questions wrong. When they start asking things like...Would I want my ideal match to want me to want to brush my teeth on a daily basis. Makes my head spin just thinking about that. Too many hypotheticals. Let's just start with a good sense of humor. Or if you feel like talking comics. And while you don't need to be a comic book nut, it will probably help if you're not anti-comic book. It is my job, it's something I'm passionate about, and I've not only been to Comic-Con but exhibited there. And if all my ramblings about comic books and Buffy aren't enough incentive...I also suck at this stuff. But I doubt I'm the only one that finds it awkward striking up a conversation from these stupid profiles.
