I am courteous, geeky, and realistic.

My Self-Summary

I'm an 30 (doh!) geek, spelled g double e-k... I've seen lots of movies, heard lots of different music, know lots of jokes. Most of the jokes I tell have pop culture influence. I love video games and hope to design/program/teach games some day. I would like to spend extended periods of time in Sweden or northern Europe. I'd also learn how to play some kind of instrument (better) so I can impress a lady with my classic video game mixes.

My favorite band is Sirenia, though Draconian, Nightwish and Epica are also awesome. I think living in Ann Arbor is pushing me to like more indie rock. :/ I don't know what I think about that yet.

What I’m doing with my life

Currently I'm working at the UoM doing software development. I really enjoy my job and am interested in the future of education. I'm nearly finished getting a masters degree in Software Engineering. I'm pretty busy and do many different activities. I'd like to try to find time to get to a beach every weekend this summer, of what's left with it.

When the fall semester starts, I'd like to get back into dancing, programming games, and possibly finding somethingelse to do in the community.

After this job, I'd like to go work for a game, animation or film company, but I'll probably just end up stuck doing more and more web programming. ;) Perhaps I'll someday teach at a junior college, as I'm not going to be getting a PhD. I'd really settle for working anywhere that's nearly always warm but for the short term satisfied sticking around in Michigan.

I’m really good at

I'm good at seeing the big picture, I'm good at making plans, and convincing others that about the goodness of the plans, and at work having other carry out the plans. I'm good at long term planning and designing.

I tend to follow in the theory of structured procrastination, and usually it works out for the best. I'm usually pretty good at cleaning up after others, but I'm only mostly good about cleaning up after myself. My life is usually only about an hour from spotlessness though.

The first things people usually notice about me

People usually don't notice me, unless they want something and think I have the answer or means to get them to the answer. Then then over-notice me, and can't stop noticing me, and I have no where to hide. Otherwise I'm generally somewhat invisible.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I mostly listen to either gothic/alternative metal or rock/post-punk/post-grunge groups, it depends on my mood. Sometimes I'm feeling down and I need some metal for energy, and sometimes I'm content and just need to chill out with some smoother music.

Typical metal bands range from female fronted symphonic metal bands to classic and modern rock bands. I'm getting more into melodic death lately, especially Scandinavian bands. I went through a lot of phases. I listen to a ton of stuff and love music. I usually get into a style after it's popular. Similar to how I seem to be liking hip-hop now that it's getting past it's popularity. Post hip-hop?

(Rest of the very long band list is at http://www.last.fm/user/ripburger)

My favorite food is usually Mexican and I love Mexicantown in Detroit. I usually eat as some 'better than Taco Bell Mexican' like Moe's once a week, too long to get downtown. I also like sake + sushi and beer with a good sandwich.

I like a ton of movies, and own like 100 or so dvds but probably should sell most of them for lack of time. Mostly comedies, musicals and tv on dvd are my favorite. I like anything with Kristen Bell and Jason Segel, so I was a big fan of Forgetting Sara Marshall. I'll fill in the rest of this sometime. Mamma Mia was a great musical last year. I've been a fan of movie musicals since Menkin/Ashman's Little Shop of Horrors and have seen many since then. However I've never actually went to a live theater musical. :/

I mostly read non fiction books, I really enjoyed everything from Malcolm Gladwell's. I also read many books on video game and computer history. I'm trying to study spanish in my spare time. I mostly like books on economics or psychology. As far as fiction goes, I like graphic novels, and I've been reading some Marvel ones. My favorite fiction authors would either be Neil Gaiman or Neil Stephenson.

The six things I could never do without

Computer + Internet, video games, metal music, migraine meds, warm summers, nearby family

I spend a lot of time thinking about

I typically like to over think everything so I spend a lot of time thinking. Most of the time it's about work and that's probably a good thing because usually I'll be sitting around and have great inspirational moments. Sometimes it's about my hobbies. Other times its about other people.

On a typical Friday night I am

At a local bar with friends, watching a movie with my roommate, playing video games, walking around town, going to concerts, working late. Friday's are very random. I'm *usually* not thinking about work though.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I'm a big fan of dancers and acrobats. I think girls in the movies are sexier with their glasses on. I enjoy dancing (but am not very good yet) and watching most of those dance shows. I'm a fan of algebra and I have numbers I like and dislike. I'm a big fan of 5 but I dislike all of the other odd numbers, taking a liking to the evens.

You should message me if

If you're looking for something more than random IM's with no chance of anything else in the next couple years, I'm looking for someone around my age (Half+7 is good), who has some level of college education, some desire to do idea of what they are doing with life. As I'm going to be here for at least a couple of years I'd also prefer you're not planning on seeing the world or relocating for long periods of time. ;)

I tend to get along best with artists, engineers and educators. Though I do consider myself economically conservative and socially liberal (liberatarian?), I can't usually agree on any candidate or religion. I guess perhaps I might have been just unlucky.
