My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Contented intellectual seeking same.

My scholarly social scene is mostly too punk or socially conscious or graceless to go in for some of the excesses I enjoy. Apart from romance, if you occasionally like spending too much money on dining, clothing, and performance (not the crusty status circuit), get in touch. As friends, going dutch, being platonic, definitely not 'spoiling'.

About me

First admission: I need six hours to get ready in the morning. I read. I write. I swim. I use four different oils in my daily beauty routine. I try on three or four outfits. I make a big meal. Then I am happy to talk to another human being. Exceptions made for weekends, holidays, and such.

Second admission: I am louche. I suck my teeth in disapproval. I will take the best piece of chicken on the platter for myself. Most of my dear friends are both honorable and sly, sharp and slippery. We enjoy ourselves without shame.

Third admission: Consonance of taste matters in how drawn I am to a person. The artists and intellectuals and folks I hang with uneventfully cross lines of culture, class, race, gender, sexuality, and ability without treating the experience as a pelt to hang on their wall. I can appreciate simplicity, but I can't do sentimentality or the gimmicky repackaging of yesterday's genius. I think the rebooted Battlestar Galactica was a more challenging revival than most attempts to fuck around with John Cage or Brecht. <--I see that I get surly when I have to endure presentations that offer no real surprise. The flip side is that when I feel aesthetic resonance, I become radiantly happy.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
Teaching at a local college.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Warm regard, whiling away the day.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
My smile and ass. I own an emerald pleather trench and more than one Dynasty-era silk dress. If I am feeling it, I dress big and tend to stand out in a crowd.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food

The music I'm most excited about plays at places like Constellation, the Hideout, Empty Bottle, or Hungry Brain. I really, really go out of my way for New Music (aka contemporary classical). I attended Lollapalooza to see Sleater Kinney. Aretha Franklin/Chicago, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings/the Vic, Prince/United, Cassandra Wilson/ see where this list is going.

Favorite authors: Jane Bowles, Mahasweta Devi, Alice Adams, Eileen Myles, Sarah Schulman, Denton Welch, Richard Hughes, A.S. Byatt and her sister (yeah, I have loyalties), Rabih Alameddine, Joanna Russ, Nella Larsen, Ben Okri, Jean Rhys....In genre fiction, I admire Walter Mosley, Laurie King, and Tobias Buckell. I will never stop recommending Barbara Wilson, Jane Rule, and June Arnold as under-read lesbian treasures.

Please, let's talk about reading.

I prepare simple meals. Someone else can confit my duck and truffle my butter: all I do is wash the greens or warm the bread. I like all cuisines when I leave it to the professionals.

Favorite TV shows: Deadwood, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Bob's Burgers, Peep Show, Treme, Mad Men. Most of my favorite novelists are lesbian modernists: what is it with this difficult, damaged, profane, pathetically ennobled dickfest? Then I remember the dissolute qualities and characters of lesbian modernist authors.... Patricia Highsmith would do well drinking with Al Swearengen.

Favorite places: The Book Cellar, Trap Door Theater, Columbia College Dance Center, High Concept Labs, Big Chicks, Pratt Beach, Ganz Hall.
