I am witty, inquisitive, and a tiny bit neurotic.

My Self-Summary

I wish the world was all puppies and rainbows- it's not, but I try to make my little corner of it a patient, kind, and peaceful place...

What I’m doing with my life

Although my true quest is to make the perfect pie crust from scratch, I spend my days as a high school history teacher. Through my studies, I've develped a great admiration for Genghis Khan- I can tell you all about him if that piques your curiousity. While I spend a lot of time talking about Nero, Henry XIII, and Otto von Bismarck, I really try to teach important things like social justice, tolerance of new ideas, and the importance of condoms (we have way too many teen pregnancies in my school- obviously the health teachers aren't getting the job done).

Yo soy una professora de historia. Yo quiero hacer una postre perfecto. En la classe, nosotros decimos hace ...

Ich bin eine Lehrerin.

I’m really good at

1. making chocolate chip cookies.
2. vacuuming.
3. making up stories about random people I see on the street.
4. laughing at my friends when they get drunk, but making sure they drink enough water.
5. sitting on my balcony with a cool drink and a good book.
6. making it to the gym almost every day- esp when it's a wateraerobics class, and I'm the only person under the age of 60 doing tuck jumps in the pool.
7. laughing at my cats when they accidentally roll off the couch and pretend that nothing happened.
8. making Red Velvet cupcakes from scratch.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I love to read; in fact, I don't get these people who don't read. With so much amazing literature out there, there are no excuses to subsist solely on video games and hulu. I'm a huge fan of fiction: my fav writers are John Irving, Tom Robbins, Orson Scott Card, and EM Forester (and I do pick up the occasional Jodi Piccoult book when I need a good beach read).

Music? I can't categorize or list- there are too many to name. Foo Fighters will always be at the top of the list, and everything else is good if it has a good beat.

TV: I'm not compelled to watch very many shows, and I hate reality TV with the passion of a thousand burning suns. But I love well written shows, like the Office, The Riches, 6 Feet Under, Dexter, Kids in the Hall, 30 Rock, and Lie to Me.

The six things I could never do without

Comfy Bed.
CTA Card.
Job that I really enjoy.

I wouldn't want to live without hot showers, partially because I've spent a fair amount of time in places without hot water and without showering facilities, and partially because there is no better way to relax at the end of a long day.

I couldn't live without NPR, because I would go crazy in traffic without Carl Kasell's calming voice.

I love to cook, so couldn't live in a place without a working kitchen- imagine subsisting solely on take out!

I spend a lot of time thinking about

ways to get grants that would allow me to travel around the world and study foreign cultures and religions during the summer- but I haven't gotten any yet...

On a typical Friday night I am

volunteering with LGBT and homeless youth. We open up the church basement, put out some lemonade and Oreos, and encourage the kids to be themselves. That could mean letting the drag queens wear make-up, referring to the trans kids by the pronoun/name they prefer, and watching all of the kids do the Vogueing dance. And yes, we're obviously a very open, inclusive, and welcoming church.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

James Madison is my favorite Founding Father- he wrote the Federalist Papers, he argued for centralization of national government, and although Jefferson had the sexy red hair, Madison recognized that if all men were angels, we wouldn't need rule of law.
