The inaugural arse of the day award..

Goes to me. Let me explain.

When a computer is messed up with too many viruses and you decide you need to reinstall Windows, backing up your data doesn't make you an idiot.

Backing your data onto a USB hard drive, and then proceeding to FORMAT that hard drive afterwards DOES.

Hmmm,... depending on the importance and the quantity of the data you lost, you could find some utilities to undo a format. Most formats nowadays are quick formats and just affect the master boot record. Therefore your data may be intact beyond that. However if you have done a low level format you will need so see forensics. They've got the good stuff. Even so, some of your data may be beyond recognition or useless. Good luck.

Correction. I meant to say FAT (File Attribute Table), instead of MBR. But they're both in the same area of the HDD anyway, and if its a quick format, there's utilities like PC Inspector which may be able to recover some of your data.

An image of leeum Problem solved, by the way. I managed to get something called "Recover My PC" which wasn't free although it was a lot more user-friendly than PC Inspector. Phew, and I thought I was going to lose all my saved episodes of Babylon 5. Does that make me a bit of a dork?
