I am curious, open-minded, and amusing.
My Self-Summary
Right. I like all the usual stuff. All those things you like. And I
do all those things too. The ones you do. The normal ones. But you
want more detail, right?
I value people who hold onto their craziness.
I have a generally positive view of mankind. I like most of
us.
I like meeting new people, perhaps especially the random ones. I've
made very good friends in cafes and on trains.
I like people who can
talk about everything, ideally being silly
about clever things and clever about silly ones.
I
read a fair amount
though less than before. I now buy more
books than I can read, which is stupid,
but I expect to keep doing it.
I love
travelling,
reading,
films,
art, the sea, food from places I've never
been to, all that usual stuff that we all like.
I hardly ever watch TV. I have one bit it hasn't been plugged in
for months. I'm thinking of putting it under the stairs. Unless you
want it.
I'm rediscovering long walks. Part of my attempt to avoid the damn
tube as much as possible.
I've lived in a fair few places - US and China for longest - so I
guess I have a global take on the world. I keep a connection to the
places I've lived. That sense of awareness of a lot of the planet
and not just one corner of it is important to me.
I used to love travelling alone but now I prefer doing it with
someone.
What I’m doing with my life
Getting as much out of it as I can. Stalling. Getting out and doing
stuff.
I’m really good at
Cripes. Talking I guess. Procrastination. Being consistently 10
minutes late. Being a good friend. Finding new restaurants, films,
art, music, etc.
The first things people usually notice about me
I need a haircut. My accent.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
WG Sebald, Jane Austen, Philip Roth, Paul Muldoon, JG Ballard,
Penelope Fitzgerald. Lots. Of course I read silly books and
detective novels too. In fact that's largely what I read. But I
like to forget what they are so I can keep reading them again. So
before I could list some I'd have to walk over to look at the
bookshelf to see what they are and, well, I can't be
bothered.
All kinds of music. Alt-rock of all kinds from the 80s on. Folk.
Jazz. Baroque and modern classical. Country. Old soul and funk.
Bach and Shostakovich, Sonic Youth and PJ Harvey, The Dubliners and
Johnny Cash, Curtis Mayfield and Etta James, Billie Holiday and
Peggy Lee, Miles Davis and Duke Ellington.
Food. Everything from everywhere. If I've never had it before I
want to try it. Now.
For film I'm more arthouse than hollywood. I can watch a good car
chase or even a cartoon but you're most likely to find me at curzon
soho. But at least I'm embarrassed about that. I really have to
watch more schlock.
The six things I could never do without
Friends, family, music, my f***ing computer, a notebook to scribble
in, surprises.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Punctuation, especially semi-colons and dashes.
On a typical Friday night I am
Either out at 2am in a new bar I've just discovered with a bunch of
crazy people, having dinner with a few friends, or at home with a
book and a whisky.
