My self-summary
I'm Matt. I'm a software engineer who likes to read about economics and finance. In other words, a total nerd.

I'm an interesting fusion of Midwestern suburbanite, beach bum and city aficionado. I love the interesting places to eat, shop and hang out that the city offers. I also love puzzles of all kinds, baseball games, hiking, bike riding (a new thing for me) and walking around parks with my dog. The beach is my relaxing escape.
What I’m doing with my life
Spoiling my little dog, Trooper, with walks, toys, and attention. Learning about the vast problem space that is unintended consequences in our complex systems: technical, human and economic. Finding new places of natural beauty to gawk at. For the last ten or so years, I've been breaking computer software -- sometimes for fun, and sometimes for work.

After detours through Kansas City, the Ozarks, Texas and Los Angeles, I moved to the Bay Area in August of 2007 to take a job at Apple as an engineer. I made the move to San Francisco in 2012. After 7 years at Apple, I've just joined a new company in San Francisco where I'm leading the security & privacy program. I'm part of this grand experiment:
I’m really good at
Finding logical explanations for the seemingly insane.

Answering your burning questions, be it because you need to know or it's just for fun.

Making people I care about smile when they've had a hard day.

Pretty much any problem that can be solved by using, writing, hacking, or otherwise manipulating computer software.
The first things people usually notice about me
My big blue eyes, my independence, or my sense of humor.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
My favorite book is Stephen King's "Cujo".

Movies and television are not really a big thing for me. I haven't had cable since 2010, and the last five items in my Netflix history span years of watching.

Some of the artists you'd find in my library in large numbers: Anberlin, Daughtry, Kelly Clarkson, Maroon 5.

Thai, Italian, and good old fashioned diner food are things I enjoy.
The six things I could never do without
1. My family/friends

2. A beach. I periodically just NEED to unwind.

3. My dog: one cute little thump of that tail and even the worst day gets better.

4. My job: it provides the money to do other, fun things.

5. My phone: with friends and family all over, it's how I keep in touch. It's also my flashlight, my navigator, and a great entertainment tool.

6. Challenge: people say variety is the spice of life, and it is, but the best kind of variety makes you think.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Ways I can improve other people's lives enough to get paid for it. What my family and friends back in the Midwest are up to. My little dog, and how cute he is.
On a typical Friday night I am
Relaxing at home and recharging for the weekend. Playing Starcraft with old colleagues. Organizing my home after destroying it the prior week.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I have a classic southern accent. It's gotten weaker over my years in California. However, it comes out really strongly after a trip home to visit the family, or if I'm particularly passionate about something.
I’m looking for
  • Straight girls only
  • Ages 23–37
  • Near me
  • Who are single
  • For new friends, long-term dating
You should message me if
You think I sound interesting and we might have things in common.

You have a cute dog and would like to have a dog play-date with Trooper and I. (Spoiler: I've yet to meet a dog I didn't think was cute)

You'd like to explore the city with me.

We'll see where it goes from there. I'm not here for a hook-up/fling/etc. but I'm not opposed to making a new friend if that's what comes of things.
