My self-summary Propose an edit

Just moved here from NYC and looking to make new connections.

I'm a bit of a contrarian. I miss drive-in movies. I love the beach, but hardly ever go. I seriously considered doing a residency in neurosurgery because the conversational value of chiming in when someone says, "It doesn't take a brain surgeon to....--" entered into the decision-making process (rocket science was out when I hit med school; but I decided on medical neurology instead). I like baseball. I can do some useful things like fix cars (automotive maintainence being a Zen thing and all; my current semi-obsession is my classic 20yr old Porsche.) I'm a vegetarian, but I don't care much if you are, unless that means you know the best restaurants.

Someday I dream of having more free time... this whole curing stuff thing is really crimping my plans for world-traveling and/or catching up on all those Simpsons episodes I've missed.

Robert Heinlein once wrote, "A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects." - and I can do lots of those things, though I wouldn't want to do many of them. But I think it's a good philosophy. So I'm workin' on it.

What I'm doing with my life Propose an edit

Just started working as a physician. Also did a PhD as part of my training and will be doing some biomedical research-- the molecular biology of Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases and general aging interest me specifically.

When not doing that stuff, lately I've been unpacking lots of boxes and fighting crime with my superpowers.

Does someone want to teach me to surf?

I'm really good at Propose an edit

Kind of a lot, actually. Oh, and being humble for sure. (No, really!)

The first thing(s) people usually notice about me Propose an edit

My breasts. No, wait, that wasn't me. Ummmm.... I've been told I have a great laugh, and I like to use it.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food Propose an edit

Totally random samplings, by no means comprehensive:

Reads:douglas adams, oliver sacks, chuck palahniuk, david eggers, salinger, John Irving, david sedaris, Hemingway (the most talented writer of the 20th century, in my humble opinion), vonnegut, douglas coupland, Howard Zinn.

Tunes: REM, The White Stripes, Queen, Ben Folds, David Bowie, Santana, Bloodhound Gang, Tool, Greg Brown, Jim's Big Ego, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, The Who, Rage Against the Machine, cheesy 80's music; Dar Williams, the Beastie Boys, Eddie from Ohio, "Hedwig & The Angry Inch", "Rocky Horror Picture Show", "Avenue Q"; Jazz (especially performed live), funk, and lots more...

the yum: Artichokes, pomme frites, heirloom tomatoes, macaroons, fancy cheese. Indian (Sangam and Ayurveda), Thai (though I hated 99% of the Thai places in NYC), and hippie veg b.s. (I'm mostly vegetarian but for some occasional fish) are my favorites.

video games: I have a Wii and think it's highly entertaining with friends-- Guitar Hero, Wii Sports, Mario Galaxy...

entertainment: NPR, This American Life, documentaries, Lost, Heroes

Flicks: Royal Tannenbaums, Waiting for Guffman, This is Spinal Tap, Singles, Napoleon Dynamite, Glory, Lost boys, Almost Famous, Motorcycle Diaries, Little Miss Sunshine, Hi Fidelity, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Last Waltz, Fletch

TV: Family Guy, Daily Show, Planet Earth, The West Wing, Sports Night, Nova, How It's Made, and almost anything on the Discovery or History channel.

EDITORS

I spend a lot of time thinking about Propose an edit

The neurobiology of Alzheimer's disease. Carbohydrate determinants of Notch ligand binding. Signal transduction. How someone who spends a lot of time thinking about these things will find a date. The red sox.

On a typical Friday night I am Propose an edit

Honestly, probably working. But I've usually got the energy to go out after. Since I'm in a new place I'll have to come up with a new Friday night routine.... live music in some dive bar might be fun, or just catching a movie on someone's couch (mine will have to wait until I re-acquire an actual couch, though)

You should message me if Propose an edit

You want to say hi. Most especially if my admittedly esoteric work interests you; it's my passion! (Oh-- or if your mom told you it was time to go out and "meet a nice doctor" or something. You'll get to be a good girl for your mom AND meet what some would consider a pretty cool guy.)
