My self-summary
Eeeeek, hi, I'm Melissa.

I apologise, this is long.

I love music, and London and all the amazing gigs.

Pretty passionate about life in general really, though not one of those annoying overly positive people, I like to balance the cheeriness with a healthy dose of cynicism where necessary.

Equal parts modern day self-sufficient woman/part reluctant girly girl who still screams for the nearest male when there's a spider.

God writing a blurb about yourself is WEIRD, bear with me.

Okay I asked my (obviously completely unbiased) best friend to sum me up, I'm aware this is kind of cheating but it's a lot easier! she generously came up with "Smart, vivacious, witty, compassionate, independent, loyal, fun to be around, down to earth, awesome!! it's weird putting you in a little box of words! p.s. you're doing internet dating? xx".

Thanks Chris, yes I am doing internet dating!

She is obviously far too kind with her summary...but actually it is worth noting she is a journalist so clearly only states the facts.

I live in Dalston (but don't judge me I'm only like 17.5% hipster).

I work as a designer for an advertising agency.

I do some volunteer work, which I like to think ever so slightly balances out the fact that most of the time I work for a company that markets fanta to 5 year olds.

I do have some not so awesome points:

– I use emoticons

– I smoke when I'm drinking/socially (I'm aware this is not a particularly sexy habit)

– I'm originally from NZ so I have a pretty silly accent, though thankfully being from the city it's not quite as strong as Murray from Flight of the Conchords.

– I've only been here 4 years but am hoping as the years go by I can blend in and people will stop asking me to say "fush and chups")

I am lucky to have pretty damn cool family and some awesome friends and I love cooking for them and sometimes we get drunk and dance.
What I’m doing with my life
I'm going to give the most cliche answer possible...living it! but, really, living it..."life is not a dress rehearsal" and also "life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans" (I love quotes, bit naff I know).

Though I can be serious and sensible as well, promise. eg: I recently spent hundreds of pounds on luxury bedding, so I do feel this marks some kind of sacred transition from "girl" to "woman"...that or I just got totally duped by John Lewis and their aspirational advertising. Damn them.
The first things people usually notice about me
Probably my cheesy grin and my dodgey accent.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
MUSIC:
Far too many to list, but lately...Radiohead, Atoms for Peace, Grizzly Bear, Alt-J, Bon Iver, Other Lives, Lana del Rey, Frankie Rose, School of Seven Bells, Warpaint, Purity Ring, The Black Keys, Austra, The Cure...okay I think I'll stop before I just start listing my entire iTunes.

Food: almost everything, I'm currently into trying (and somewhat failing) at attempting Ottolenghi recipes. Vietnamese on Kingsland Rd, dumplings in Chinatown, Sunday roast, Japanese, Mexican, Turkish, everything! (except offal, that's where I draw the line).

Books: Never have enough time to read as much as I like, but last three were "Watching the English" "Dead Babies" (I didn't choose that one, it was for Bookclub :s) and "How to be a Woman" (not what it sounds like, well not really).
The six things I could never do without

I spend a lot of time thinking about
Being a Guardian reader I spend most of my days thinking about third world poverty, gender politics, and the meaning of life...

Na to be honest today I was mainly just pondering:
– how I was looking forward to the Jane Fonda exercise class I had booked in for after work
– whether I had enough in the cupboard to scrape a dinner together or whether I should pick something up
– and how not to sound like a complete dick on my dating profile.
On a typical Friday night I am
As with most people I guess it varies... in PJs with a friend watching films, having friends round for food, at a pub having "just a few", at a gig, at a party.
I’m looking for
  • Guys who like girls
  • Ages 29–37
  • Near me
  • Who are single
  • For long-term dating, short-term dating
You should message me if
I think we can all admit online dating is kind of unnatural and not dissimilar to shopping on Amazon, so I may as well just write a "wishlist":

Kind, fun, smart, curious, silly, grown up, sexy, unpretentious, open, warm, happy, genuine, outgoing, can make me laugh (not at all difficult).

If you are even half those things then you'd probably be a cool person to go for a drink with at the very least.

...bonus points if you also have excellent taste in music, food and shoes...and you smell nice (I know, I do ask a lot).

P.s. I've refrained from using an emoticon this whole time and I just can't do it any longer..smiley face! :)
