Books: I'm currently keeping track of all the books I read in a
year, and reading 8 books in rotation. It's a lot of fun. I tend to
read a fair amount of horror fiction, books on spirituality (on a
major gnostic kick right now), Vermont history. I like to toss in a
few books that are not what I usually read, too--other nonfiction,
a smattering of literary stuff. I reread It every couple
years and still love it. Faulkner remains a favorite from
college.
I read a handful of webcomics with dedication.
Movies: Somewhat eclectic tastes. I tend to watch a lot of horror
movies, sci-fi, and indie films. I think horror movies reached
their artistic peak in films like Rosemary's Baby and
Let's Scare Jessica to Death and I think the tendency
toward graphic torture stuff has ruined the genre. In the other
direction, I love Once and was floored recently by The
Best Exotic Marigold Hotel .
Other favorites: V For Vendetta, Night of the Living Dead (1968),
Christopher Nolan's Batman movies.
TV: Usually stuff that lasted a decade or stuff that was canceled
prematurely. Friends, Twin Peaks, MASH, old horror anthology shows,
Firefly, Criminal Minds. I was surprised to learn how truly
well-written Gilmore Girls was. My roommate has been introducing me
to the different incarnations of Transformers , too.
Music: Mildly obsessed with Glen Hansard. Generally: an eclectic
range from indie-pop stuff like Death Cab and Belle & Sebastian
to folkier stuff like Richard Shindell and Dar Williams; nineties
stuff like The Frames, Sixpence, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Oasis;
classic rock from the 60s and early 70s (Beatles and Dylan and Neil
Young especially); old country, big band, and western swing. If
it's a Top 40 song that came out in the last 10 years, I probably
haven't heard it, and I'm fine keeping it that way.
Food: cheese, beer, hearty bread and crackers, fresh veggies and
fruit, canned fish and meat (sardines are GOOD!), pasta, rice. I
will murder you for an actual ripe avocado. Basic stuff mostly, but
now and then I treat myself to sushi or Vietnamese or a burger. Oh
and I pretty much only look at the meat section at the grocery
store to see if they have any organ meats on special. I really miss
pickled tripe.
