My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Hey everyone! I'm originally from Northern California (explains the semi-ridiculous username) and I've been living in Austin for about two years now. I study at UT Austin now, getting my PhD in Middle Eastern history.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I'm currently reading for my comprehensive exams, which means hypothetically I'm reading a book a day. Sometimes half a book, sometimes three articles -- but most often a full book.

I also TA, head my department's student committee, work in the admissions at UT, coordinate a lecture series, tutor underprivileged students in my neighborhood, and play soccer (albeit very poorly with repetitive apologies) on the weekends.

I also read the news pretty regularly. That's something I'm doing with my life, I suppose... Keeping up with the times...
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
talking, teaching, writing.

Things I wish I were good at: cooking.
The first things people usually notice about me
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I laugh a lot. Like, a lot and quite loud. I'd like to think it's endearing.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food

So much to write here. I think my favorite films have to be the Godfather trilogy and the Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight trilogy. You can't go wrong with any of those six films (the final Godfather may not be great, but it's part of the series so let's not dismiss it altogether...). In terms of TV shows, I would say Mad Men, Game of Thrones, Nova, and -- because I'm just a little too old to be part of the vampire craze but just young enough to appreciate a cast of good looking actors pretending to be mythical creatures -- The Originals.

Books... That's too big a question. I'll just say that my favorite books are The English Patient and Catch 22. I have not seen the movie for the latter. I need to get on that.

Food - Italian, Persian, sandwiches. That's where it's at.

I'm not so knowledgeable about music, something that has hindered me more often than not since that's such a huge part of Austin culture. I do love music -- I just don't know much about it.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
Hm...

1. Entertainment
2. Good books
3. Good friends
4. Good food
5. Good wine
6. Health care
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
I spend a lot of time planning trips abroad.

I also spend time preparing for conferences, where I travel to talk about my ideas and hear other people talk about their ideas (and to see a new city, the main reason I go to conferences...).
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Out with friends at some bar or at a party.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
I already admitted it in the favorite shows section - I'm very into The Originals. It started with The Vampire Diaries, but I'm no longer terribly invested in that and have begun to watch The Originals religiously, every Tuesday. It's a character flaw, I'm sure.

you think you can make me laugh. You're confident. You get your news from Jon Stewart. You like what you do for a living and are generally a positive person. Your profile is not littered with selfies. Sing-alongs to 90s Disney movies sounds like the time of your life.

And you're a good, genuine person. That's the main thing.
