I am inventive, reserved, and bookish.

My Self-Summary

On days when I don't feel like I'll be in school forever, life is dandy. Born on the Left Coast, I graduated from a small liberal arts college in the Midwest, completed a cross-disciplinary graduate degree in theology in British Columbia, and am about to jump across the pond again for another master's in literature in England. I love poetry and spy novels and the occasional bit of science fiction, as well as classic films. Although I strive not to be an obnoxious hipster, I avoid the radio and stick to my indie music. When I'm not drowned in academic work, I do some creative writing. And to prove (to myself) I'm not simply a useless academic, I indulge in cooking whenever I've got the time and the kitchen space.

Although I mostly like people and life, I can't deny the pleasure of a well-placed bit of cynicism and sarcasm.

Most of all I'm looking forward to the day I'm settled in one town long enough that I can finally get a dog. In the meantime it's travel and books.

What I’m doing with my life

Putting together a veritable alphabet soup of acronyms to go after my name.

I’m really good at

Writing, reading, clever/silly quips, teaching swim lessons and poetry, shamelessly singing along with my music in my car, tying my shoes, cooking, practicing hospitality.

The first things people usually notice about me

My long hair, and whichever book I'm reading at present.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

A. My favorite authors include Patricia McKillip, Dorothy Sayers, Mary Oliver, Neil Gaiman, George R.R. Martin, Tennyson, Frederick Buechner, Carol Ann Duffy, Denise Levertov, Rainer Maria Rilke, R.S. Thomas, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, William Stafford, and, and...

B. The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Casablanca, The Third Man, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Bon Voyage, Serenity, Hot Fuzz

C. Bach, Tori Amos, Fleet Foxes, Neko Case, Puccini, Andrew Bird, The Decemberists, Explosions in the Sky, Linford Detweiler, Gillian Welch, Calexico, Richard Buckner, Old Crow Medicine Show, Sufjan Stevens

D. I hate breakfast foods. At least, I hate them at breakfast time.

The six things I could never do without

A well-stocked bookshelf, my laptop, my iPod, a good reading chair, the sun (and yet, I'm in the Pacific Northwest), and oxygen is pretty nice, too.

I spend a lot of time thinking about

Books, and how dare people say poetry is worthless, and, my, comic books aren't as useless as I thought, and why can't there be more good movies, please tell me why?

On a typical Friday night I am

With friends in some fashion, whether it's out and about, or cozying up on the couch with a good movie.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

Oh yes, darlings, let's admit private things all over the intarwebs, shall we?

If you want to?
