My self-summary
Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
Apparently, in my glasses, I have a bit of a sexy-librarian-type thing going on. I am perfectly ok with this.

I read a lot. I write and edit for a living. I love the movies but I never seem to go often enough. I wish I did more karaoke. (UPDATE: lately, I have been doing more karaoke, and it has been super fun.) I am a little bit in love with Agent Coulson from Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. I like butterflies and reptiles and fall weather and good pancakes.

I need a good dose of naughty with my nice. But the nice is really important, too.

Lifelong New Yorker, mostly various boroughs of NYC but also several years in and around Ithaca, NY. Brooklyn’s been home since 2005. I love the city but also love to escape to places with a lot more trees and stars and quiet from time to time.
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I write books for kids and young adults and edit various things that other people have written. I do some traveling for the book stuff, mostly in the U.S. Trying to do more non-work traveling elsewhere - my passport has been shamefully neglected for way too long. (Making progress: Italy this past summer, planning Costa Rica and Scotland next!) Here at home I love walking around Brooklyn, watching things, reading things, trying to get to know my neighborhood better, meeting friends for drinks or food or exploring or shows or whatever else seems like a good idea at the time.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
Finding happiness in little things; working on my stir-frying skills; empathy; overthinking; making lists; abandoning lists; editing other people’s stuff (sometimes my own, but it’s hard to see your own stuff as clearly); using semicolons; wandering; wondering.

This part got long. I won't blame you if you skip it. :) I don't think there's any reason we need to like the same things here anyway, although if you are someone who thinks all genre fiction is crap, we will probably not get along. (Some of it is crap, no question. But there's a lot of literary fiction/nonfiction/every-other-category-you-can-think-of crap out there, too. Just sayin.)

Books: I read and love lots of stuff, but there is definitely more science fiction and fantasy than anything else. Over the past few years I have become somewhat addicted to audiobooks; lately I've been listening to a lot of P. G. Wodehouse and Agatha Christie, among other things. I'm usually in the middle of several books at once. Right now it's Adi Rule's Strange Sweet Song; GRRM's A Dance with Dragons (been reading this one very slowly for months, not loving it like the earlier books); and taking a break from my audiobook list to catch up on my new podcast addiction: Welcome to Night Vale.

Movies: Die Hard, 12 Monkeys, The Fifth Element, lots of other things that star Bruce Willis (I enjoy him. I am not ashamed of this.) Ghostbusters, Princess Bride, Hellboy, The Empire Strikes Back, Young Frankenstein, My Cousin Vinny, How to Train Your Dragon, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Cabin in the Woods, Moonstruck, Overboard, Coming to America, Edward Scissorhands, Charlie Bartlett, Galaxy Quest, Shakespeare in Love, Nobody’s Fool, Groundhog Day, Back to the Future, The Shawshank Redemption. (I just realized that these are all really old. A couple of more recent favorites: The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Lego Movie.)

Shows: Recent new favorites include Sherlock and Dr. Who. Older: Buffy, Angel, Firefly. Veronica Mars. Arrested Development. Scrubs. 30 Rock. Really liked the first two seasons of Downton Abbey, and most of House. I don’t watch much in real time - mostly Netflix and Hulu after the fact.

Music: I like all kinds of things, except perhaps soft jazz. Recurring favorites include Violent Femmes, My Chemical Romance, Muse, The Killers, Danny Elfman movie scores, musical theater, They Might Be Giants, Meat Loaf, Oingo Boingo, Sha Na Na. Random songs from bands and songwriters I hardly know that friends have turned me on to. I bet I like some of what you like, too.

Food: Italian, Thai, sushi, burgers, BBQ, brunch, fried rice, grilled vegetables, red wine, breakfast cereal, Reese's peanut butter cups. Pralines! I like other stuff too. Food is good.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
Books, some kind of well-stocked music/audiobook-playing device, the subway, woods/trees/natural spaces, Netflix, Post-It Notes.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Sometimes writing/working, sometimes out with friends, sometimes curled up on the couch just recovering from the week, sometimes doing some very fun totally random thing that makes me re-appreciate how much I love NYC.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
See Bruce Willis confession above.

Also, I have not yet seen any of Breaking Bad. (I know, I know.)

Sometimes when I hear the word "snark," all I can think of is Snarf from the ThunderCats.

Offer a few tips to help matches win you over.
You're different and interesting. You think I seem different and interesting. You can recommend a good boxing gym for beginners. You won't mind if I want to sit through the credits after a good movie. You have valuable skills that will help us survive the zombie apocalypse. You can be sweet, but you also have an edge. You think we could have fun together, or at least a really good conversation.

Ultimately looking for something long-term, but in the meantime also happy just to meet new people and do fun things and see what happens.

p.s. The having fun part is really important. Serious is fine, sometimes -- essential, sometimes. But so is playful. Which is why I am a little wary of those of you who are not smiling in *any* of your photos. :) But then, I probably come off more serious in this profile than I am in real life, too.
