I am intelligent, goofy, and independent.
My Self-Summary
Most of my old friends have moved away in recent years, and I
suppose I've been too busy to spend much time meeting new people. I
spent the fourth of July weekend camping out in the Black Rock
Desert with about a thousand people and had a blast - I'd almost
forgotten how nice it can be to meet interesting and like-minded
people. I figure maybe it's time to meet people a little closer to
home.
Activity-wise, I enjoy
scuba diving and I try to make at
least one 3 or 4 day trip out to the Channel Islands each year.
I've got a
paraglider but I've only made one
flight with it in the last couple of years. I'm going to have to
make an effort to get it out more often.
I love camping in the desert (mostly the Mojave), and now I've
finally got a 4WD vehicle that can handle a little
off-roading. Just a stock
Pathfinder, but it does OK out in the desert or on the dunes at
Pismo.
What I’m doing with my life
I started my own company about four years ago, and made a full time
job of it (or rather, gave up my OTHER full time job) mid-2008. I
do mostly embedded systems design; I'm a programmer primarily, but
I don't do much programming of PCs these days - just low-power
microcontrollers. I'm not an electrical engineer, but I can fake it
for digital circuits and some basic analog stuff.
My company gives me a good excuse for overseas travel, and for
having cool toys like a CNC milling machine. I also take an
inordinate amount of pleasure in owning my own packing peanut
dispenser. So far I've resisted the temptation to install a rope
swing in the warehouse. Maybe I'll do that when driving the
forklift around ceases to be fun.
I’m really good at

The first things people usually notice about me
Physically: My eyes, or so I've been told. They're light green,
darker around the edges.
Personality-wise: People tend to assume I'm a lot more conservative
and straight-laced than I am, but that impression doesn't usually
last long.
My favorite books, movies, music, and food
Pizza, Thai food, Heinlein books and 'hard' science fiction in
general, hard rock, and movies that don't look like something I'd
like but that surprise me by being a way better story than I
expected.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Anything and everything. I often have a hard time getting to sleep
because I can't get my brain to shut off. I often think of story
ideas, but I don't think my writing ability will ever match my
imagination.
I've got zillions of project ideas in my head, and occasionally
some even become reality.
On a typical Friday night I am
At home with the kids. Or maybe out doing something really wild
like dinner at Red Robin. My son's 13 now, so he's increasingly
spending time with friends. Having a teenager introduces an
entirely new set of parenting challenges. Three more years and I'll
have two teenagers, and one driving. Yikes.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit here
Already admitted it above - this is the most public place I've ever
declared my sexual preference.
All of my close friends already know, and now that I'm
self-employed I don't have to give a damn what coworkers or my
employer think.
You should message me if
...if I sound like someone you could stand talking to for ten
minutes over coffee. All of the silly online tests and match
ratings in the world can't compete with the human brain's ability
to assess other humans. I'd rather waste ten minutes of my life
(and as long as coffee is being consumed, can you really say it's
wasted?) than miss an opportunity to meet someone
interesting.
If you're going to message me, grammar and spelling count! If you
send me a one-line message with misspellings and no punctuation, I
*will* delete it. (I'm looking at you, guys. The girls usually get
this part right.)
