My self-summary
I'm a creative, intelligent, grounded guy.

I'm funny sometimes. Although, in this context, probably not so much. I appreciate a sense of humor, though, and if someone can make me laugh, that is a very attractive quality.

I can be both shy and socially outgoing. I find value in being both. I can carry on a conversation with practically anyone. In general, I'm very curious and interested in people.

I often think of myself as Howdy Doody on the outside and David Lynch on the inside. By that, I don't mean that I am "a David Lynch film" on the inside, just David Lynch. Is that clear?

I'm polite and respectful--my momma raised me well. And I expect the same in others.

Writing this much has been torture so I'm going to stop.
What I’m doing with my life
I work in the theatre ("Oh, God," you're probably thinking) and I'm a professor at a university.

Seriously, about the theatre thing, it is a big part of my life, but I don't go around singing show tunes all of the time. Just when the mood strikes. And, fortunately, my job requires me to be interested in a variety of things.
The first things people usually notice about me
are projections.

(I stole that from someone else's profile because I love it and it's true.)
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Hands down, my favorite movie is LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL. Other favs off the top of my head are PAN'S LABYRINTH, A SINGLE MAN, ATONEMENT, VOLVER, WHAT'S UP DOC, AMELIE, REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, BEGINNERS.

I read a lot of plays...My playwright du jour is Will Eno. He writes existential dark comedies ala Samuel Beckett. They are hysterical, yet quite profound. I also read a lot of non-fiction usually related to plays I'm working on (histories, biographies, etc.). As for novels, I keep meaning to read more of them. The last one I read was THE SECRET HISTORY which came out ages ago.

I'm sort of a lesbian when it comes to music---an artsy, intelligent lesbian. I'll let you decide what that means. But, ultimately, I like a variety of styles and am always grateful for suggestions of new artists. At the moment, I'm listening a lot to Florence and the Machine, Robyn, Blair Crimmins and the Hookers, the Civil Wars.

I don't watch a lot of tv. I enjoy it, I just don't watch a lot of it. MODERN FAMILY is the one show I try not to miss.

On the good old fashioned radio, I love Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me, This American Life, Car Talk, On Being, The Splendid Table, Market Place. I guess this makes me a public radio dork.

As for food, I'll eat anything. I have a ragging sweet tooth, though.
The six things I could never do without
1. Dessert
2. Jack Black Face Buff and Energizing Scrub
3. NPR
4. Running shoes
5. Bookstores
6. A good masseur

Okay, I guess I could do without all of these things, but I wouldn't like it.
On a typical Friday night I am
Eating out with friends, seeing a play, film, or some cultural event around town, taking a yoga class, leaving to go out of town for the weekend. These days, I'm sometimes working, too (sad, but true).
