Write a little about yourself. Just a paragraph will do.
I'm a graduate student studying economics working on earning my
PhD. I still don't really know anything yet but I'm working on it.
I love the outdoors and try to make it out hiking and camping as
much as I can. I'm also sort of a foodie and I really like cooking
big meals. Maybe more like a non-practicing foodie since I'm living
on the budget of a grad student and besides who can really afford
black truffles these days.
I'm also a big film dork. I try not to be snobby about it, though!
Sometimes you're in the mood for a Michael Bay explosionfest and
sometimes you're in the mood for a super-serious Warner Herzog
documentary, you know? I'm doing my best to watch as many classics
as I can. I also really like to read (pretty much only novels
though). I love books for the exact same reason I love films. I
guess I just really like being told stories.
When I was growing up we moved around a lot. Never east of
the Mississippi but I've lived in Utah, Washington, California, New
Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma (and Colorado has always been something
of a home-away-from-home). I liked them all!
What I’m doing with my life
Don’t overthink this one; tell us what you’re doing day-to-day.
I'm In my fifth year of a PhD program. Should be finished up soon.
Not planning on trying to become a professor because there is a
whole load of bullshit associated with that path that I'm not
What I want is to be able to get a good job in a place that I want
to live for quite a while. I've done the moving around thing
enough, I'm going to be ready to try the staying still thing.
Except for travel! I want to travel the world and taste all of
I just started doing yoga a while ago and my yoga instructor told
me that I have very flexible hips, which is pretty sweet I guess. I
wasn't able to fit it into my schedule after taking classes for
about a month and I fell out of it but I would not object to
starting back up again.
I’m really good at
Go on, brag a little (or a lot). We won’t judge.
I'd like to think I'm pretty good at making and keeping close
friends. I'm trying to become good at teaching but it's a work in
progress. I've spent a few years perfecting my recipe for pasta
sauce and it's getting there. I haven't played in years but I'm
pretty sure I can still stomp a mean game of DDR. If you don't know
what that last one means, it's probably for the best.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Help your potential matches find common interests.
Books: A Farewell to Arms by Hemingway is my
favorite book. Right now I'm working my way through Haruki Murakami
works. I loved Sputnik Sweetheart and The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. I
was half way through the last book of 1Q84 but I left it on a plane
before I finished it (so if anybody has a copy they went to lend
me...). I also really like the beats, particularly William S
Burroughs. I've read half of Bukowski's novels, too. I try to
convince anyone I can to read Raymond Carver's short stories. I've
read sort of an embarrassing number of Nick Hornby's books,
Movies: I've seen The Fifth Element more times
than I can count. Same with Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
There are too many films I love that I feel like if I started
making a list I would be doing this for hours. Directors: Kubrick,
PT Anderson, Kevin Smith (hit and miss), Davids Lynch, Fincher, and
Cronenberg. You know, guys like that. I am not phased by black and
white, silent, or foreign films. I've gone to the Secret Film
Festival at the Del Mar for two years straight now and I love it!
Hand-picked foreign and indie movies shown straight from midnight
to noon across two screens.
Music: I listen to pretty much anything. An
example of CDs I keep in my car: The Magic Flute (Mozart opera), a
Boris album (Japanese drone metal/noise rock group), The Black
Album (Jay-Z), the Violent Femmes (self-titled), There is Love in
You (Four Tet), Doolittle (Pixies). I also have an unhealthy
obsession with Sigur Ros. I've been getting into old jazz and
country recently, too. Billie Holiday and Hank Williams have been
on the rotation. My car has had the newest Stromae album running
for like two weeks straight now.
Food: I'll try anything once. South/Southeast asia
(Vietnam, Thailand, and India in particular) probably is my
favorite region as far as cuisine. But I love food from all over. I
made kalbi beef a few weeks ago and it is one of the most delicious
things I've ever created.
Drinks: Whiskey/whisky. In order: Scotch (single
malt) and Scotch copycats (like Japanese), Irish, Bourbon. I also
like rum drinks and like tequila as long as I have some training
wheels to go with it. Also beer, of course. If you wanna talk
scotch with me you should do it.
The six things I could never do without
Think outside the box. Sometimes the little things can say a lot.
My car! I love the freedom that it represents. If I wanted to,
right now I could take off for NYC and there'd be nothing stopping
Music, but this goes along with the car. I like driving long
distances far more than I should but I need loud music blasting at
Friends and family are obvious ones. Probably don't need to expand
on these. Let's go with nature and technology for the last two.
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Global warming, lunch, or your next vacation… it’s all fair game.
Why do people do the things they do?
The other day I was preparing dinner and I wasn't paying attention
and I sliced the side of my thumb pretty good. It's always weird
being reminded that I'm made out of meat.
On a typical Friday night I am
Netflix and takeout, or getting your party on — how do you let loose?
Dinner and drinks with friends
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
I’m an empty essay… fill me out!
i think i might have a problem. i was eating a banana in my kitchen
while deciding what else to have for lunch and i saw my bottle of
tapatio... and i did it. hot sauce on a banana. i ate about half of
the banana with it and then put the bottle down and took a bite of
hot sauce-less banana and it just wasn't the same.
Also, I like Depeche Mode.
