I am brave, dedicated, and cheerful.

My Self-Summary

I am an American who moved to Hungary just over a year ago to realize a grand adventure. To my own surprise, I discovered a life here. I teach English in a primary school (and in a language school, to private students, and to my friends...) and am really lucky to have found a job that I enjoy going to. I don't intend to go home, but I will probably wind up traveling around to various locales. I love Hungary and would be happy here. I'm learning the language but don't really get a ton of opportunity to practice it, as everyone wants to practice their English with me!

I think that most things are very beautiful. And if they don't appear to be, maybe they just need to be lit differently.

What I’m doing with my life

I'm teaching English to little kids. It's really perfect. I honestly feel like I get paid to go play, sing, and dance all day long.

I’m really good at

cooking. It's my number-one hobby, and I love to feed people and hold dinner parties. I speak Spanish quite well. I'm good at making people feel good about themselves, or take steps to fix something that is hurting them. Finding the positive in things. Traveling with little-to-no forethought.

The first things people usually notice about me

I have really big hair, so physically that's usually the first thing. People notice that I'm a bit loud, and that I'm usually smiling or laughing. In Hungary, I get told very often that I tend to invade private space before it's necessarily polite to do- touching, standing close, leaning on people.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I usually read books in Spanish to attempt to not forget the whole language. I love Neruda, Garcia Marquez, and Borges. The same goes for music: whatever I can get my hands on in Spanish. I love... too many to list! Mostly I listen to upbeat music, because mostly I listen to music to get myself going. I like virtually everything, excepting that pause in techno music where it just goes "da da da da da" for around a minute and everyone stops dancing, unsure of what to do now.

I like movies A LOT, and also TV. I think TV is an underrated medium. I recently realized, a bit to my dismay, that I watch a lot of SciFi. Maybe because it's the only new, interesting stuff out there. I like to watch things that make me think.

Food is my hobby. I love virtually all of it. I'll eat anything except veal and goose liver (moral reasons) and celery (because it's gross).

The six things I could never do without

someplace comfortable and warm to sleep (for more than a few nights, at least), cooking, my bike, playing with kids and animals, an upcoming trip to dream about, physical contact

I spend a lot of time thinking about

expat life. Feminism and sexual politics. Traveling. My students. Cultural differences. What to cook for dinner. Differences in perception.

On a typical Friday night I am

a bit lazy. Usually showing Budapest to a new group of Couchsurfers. Doing whatever in particular suits my fancy: seeing a film, sitting in a pub, dancing, walking the city, having a dinner party...

Saturday is usually my more exciting evening.

The most private thing I’m willing to admit here

I can become rather irritated at negative people, or people who don't like their life. Life is a choice.

You should message me if

You're a kind person. You're open-minded. You want to.

You're willing to speak to me in Hungarian (it will be painful for you). Or Spanish. Or even English.
