I have a weakness for sleeping in late (when I can) and pragmatic progressive politics not bound by one ruling ideology. I’m disgustipated with both parties and their seemingly puerile masturbatory snickering solutions to world and national problems. On some late nights, I believe the human race is on a very slow, and I mean s-l-o-w course towards reaching a higher consciousness and an understanding of one another where rules, governments, religion, consumerism, white bread and mullets will no longer be needed.
I’m not a fan of organized religion but I’ve undergone a semi-spiritual awakening during the last couple of years which has banished the misanthropic tendencies of my misspent youth. But there are times I’d still like to go to Macchu Picchu, raise llamas, and watch the fungus grow on my small toes. I’m constantly contemplating how the mosaic of religion, politics, and science ultimately shape and mold human culture and history. And other times — I just like to talk about deviant sex, argue about music, laugh at mullets, rip on bad vampire movies and terrible actors, plot golden mutinies and remember great escapes. I'm spontaneous, but not impulsive, and I can swim with the flow. Prone to fits of childlike wonder, innocence, and enthusiasm but tempered by streaks of melancholy old man cynicism which leads to a balanced optimism.
As an only child books and imagination were my brothers and sisters. Some of the greats: Mark Twain, Hunter Thompson, Tom Robbins, Howard Zinn, Phillip K. Dick, John Irving, Carl Hiaasen, F. Rowling, Christopher Moore, Mary Gaitskill, David Wojnarowicz, Andrew Sean Greer, Richard Price, Ken MacLeod, Baudelaire, The Onion.
Movies - this is truly an insurmountable task. But pretty much anything Indie, Horror/Sci-Fi, Drama, Character-driven, Asian Cinema, Documentary, dark or stupid Comedies and bad Cult flix. Pixar movies. Know what I'm seein'?
Music? Nearly everything! Seriously, I just love songs. My music collection strolls from the main street of rock n roll through the suburbs of classical and jazz with a few dusty side alleys into country and rap. Some of my all-time favorites? Widespread Panic, Nirvana, The Dead,Johann Strauss, vintage AC/DC, Queen, Wilco, Interpol, Astrud Gilberto, Warren Zevon, The Beatles, the Roots, Tool, The Clash, The Stones, Cowboy Junkies, Billie Holiday, Johnny Cash, The Decemberists, and Patsy Cline.
In current heavy rotation: Drive-by Truckers, The Raveneottes, Jenny Lewis, My Morning Jacket, Girl Talk, Yo La Tengo, Dead Meadow, Brian Wilson, Spoon, The Roots, Al Green, Mudcrutch, Portishead, Silversun Pickups, Gogol Bordello, Band of Horses, Hercules and The Love Affair, NPR, Indie 103.1 LA, WRAS 88.5 Atlanta.
I'm a total gourmand; I have an edacious appetite and I’ll usually eat anything before it eats me . . . N.Y. Pizza, steak(med-rare), loaded salads, lasagna, Sour Patch Kids, hot wings, citrus fruits, gourmet jellybeans, fruit pies & cheeescake, bagels & cream cheese, King Crab legs, Chili dogs, Ice cream, dark beers, sushi, burgers with lots of toppings, Pinot Noir, Diet Coke (no Pepsi!), pulled pork, coffee, bad sugary cereals, natural peanut butter, cheese, dark chocolate slowly licked off your stomach, Italian, Greek, Mexican, Indian, Chinese, and Lebanese cuisine . . . Mmmm, I could go on and on but I'm getting hungry.
A continual list of gratitude. Toenails, barstools, and tide pools. The mystical chord of cosmic memory. Solid gold dancers. Why OKCupid took away my more adventurous award?
And how come the astronauts in The Planet of the Apes never realized sooner they were on Earth because the apes spoke English?
