My Self-Summary

Hi, I'm Jamie, and I'm not really that comfortable writing about myself! But since you probably don't have psychic powers I'll give it a shot. Looking back on it, that's probably giving away a lot already; I'm pretty self effacing, tend to be introspective unless someone's kicking my arse about it, I'm pretty rationalistic, so if you got here by googling "healing power of crystals" chances are we'd have to avoid that topic. I like most music that doesn't get played on mainstream radio, whether it's semi-ironic synthpop or utterly unironic death metal depends on my mood.

I'm pretty active physically, I did martial arts/self defence for a few years, then cross country running for another couple of years before getting to uni and getting more into free weights, although I'm no schwarzenegger! Right now I'm trying to get a little more into swimming, since I haven't done it for years.

What I’m doing with my life

Workwise, I'm working towards my PhD in Pharmacology. At the moment I'm kind of on a self-improvement jag too, trying to get up as early as possibly for swimming or the gym.

My favorite books, movies, music, and food

I enjoy reading political and philosophical books, I just finished Rawls' "A theory of justice" and have started Nozick's "Anarchy, State and Utopia" to try and get the other side of the argument. I tend to half read nonfiction books and then get excited about something else, whereas with fiction I will happily sit and do nothing for a couple of days to burn right through to the end. The last thing I read fictionwise was Nabokov's "Pale fire"; loved the premise and the writing, but felt like I was nowhere near enough of a literature nerd to quite get all the references!

I like a range of movies. Blade Runner, Dr Strangelove, Amelie, Clint Eastwood westerns, La Haine, Memento, Casablanca, No Country For Old Men, and Persepolis are all films I've watched and enjoyed. Generic student taste, I guess?

Musicwise, again I'm into a range of stuff, and try to expand my taste as much as I can whenever I get the urge. Deep and abiding loves are metal and triphop; favourite bands include Massive Attack, Iron Maiden, Slagsmalslubben, Bad Religion, Mastodon, and Bolt Thrower. Right now I'm trying to get (back) into indie stuff like Tilly and the Wall and rap, although I can't stand commercial/club rap, stuff like Wu-Tang only really . The only dealbreaker is classical music but if you're into it I'll smile politely and act interested!

Food; "yes, please" just about sums it up. The closest thing to a nickname I have is "the bottomless man". Somehow I've managed to avoid getting too fat so far, but as soon as my metabolism slows down I guess I'm gonna have to get some self control. The only things I really can't stand are baked beans, the smell makes me gag and even thinking about them now is making me sick. Oh, and I can't live without coffee.

On a typical Friday night I am
